Frog Gigging - Monday, 4/25/11

Well theres not a frog gigging forum so I assumed this was the most apprpriate place to post. Myself and two buddies got out Monday evening after it got dark. We did some frog gigging from about 830 to 1030 and ended up having a really good time. Gigged 9 but two slipped away while we we trying to put em in the bag. The first pond is where the big ones came from and the second produced the smaller ones. The legs are frying as we speak along with some bluegill that we caught a little while ago. Gonna be a good supper with the boys tonight!

I use to go 3-4 nights a week. man I love them. I skin and eat the entire frog.

i like frogging but we don't gig them we snatch them up. we use long cane poles rigged with grab hooks. slip up behind it, shine light on it, place hook under chin of frog and set hook. i have found that you don't loose any frogs or disturb other close by frogs when using this method.

Interesting. Would definitely be good because just like you say, when you strike one all the frogs close by scatter.

Awesome! I need to get out to some ponds soon. I went frog gigging for the first time late last summer with a friend, and we went several times and got some frogs. I have to say the legs are good and I can't wait to go gig some more.

Used to frog gig 3 or 4 nights a week. Don't anymore because it is hard to find a place that is safe to gig them. Frogs absorb anything in the water through their skin which is really just a permeable membrane. If you are around any farm ponds or any ponds that have pesticides or herbicides sprayed around them regularly any wash off that makes it to the ponds are absorbed by the frogs then you eat them. I pretty much blew this off for several years until a friend who is a biology major showed me some studies they had done. It was a real eye opener. I reevaluated all the areas that I frog hunted and decided it wasn't worth the risk.

But they sure are good...

Very interesting, and I was wondering about the same thing. If I find some ponds on the WMA I am guessing they would be fairly safe.

man that looks like fun, i use to go alot when i lives in louisiana. the most i ever caught in 1 night was 667. me and a 2nd cuz went all night, came in when it was to light to see them. my cuz went back the next night and he said he tore them up. caught way more them we did the night before

Yea if you get into a mess of em on a good spot then you cant beat it! I have been thinking about what gets into ponds though, some of the stuff doesnt sound or seem too safe to be eating which is tough because I love gigging em. WMA ponds does sound like a safe bet though.

Some fine eating fo sho!! Used to gig quite a few myself, but finding enough ponds to get enough for a good fry with the friends is becoming much harder around here.

ive done it once and there was 3 of us with 2 homemade gigs. we were in a shallow pond and came around a bend and a mocassin was coming around the other side and swimming fast towards us. my buddy gigged him and he wrapped around his gig. my other friend gigged him but we didnt know where at and couldnt see his head. all i had was a box cutter from work and i just went to cuttin. we made sure he was hurt enough where he couldnt get us and got the heck out of dodge. aint been back since and dont plan on it.

Recipe for gigging in Middle Tn.

1- Good supply of ponds with permission to gig.
2- Good supply of frogs on said ponds.
3- Good four or five prong gig on a 10-foot pole.
4- Good light with spare batteries.
5- 4-5 T-shirts.
6- two ice chests, one with beer, one for frogs.
7- Old truck.

As soon as you return to the truck from gigging a pond, skin frogs, using the front bottom of the short to get a good hold. Change shirts ever 30 frogs. Put frogs on ice, drink a beer, proceed to next pond. Quitting time is either 3:00 a.m. or when you run out of shirts or beer.

Wash frog well, inside and out. Dip in egg wash and shake in seasoned flour just as you would chicken. Fry until golden brown with some morels if you have some. Serve with sliced homegorowns, onion, french fries, cat head biscuits and sweet tea.

GOD! I'm slobbering like a goat eating prickly pear! Best meat is along theback, just l;ike a deer backstrap.

Not sure if I want to have to deal with too many snakes.
But that sure is a good recipe bowriter!

We've got a good number of ponds to where we can just walk the banks and stay mostly clear of snakes, and plenty of all that other stuff bowriter mentioned!

The best place... without a doubt to get them is on a golf course. We had several back in SC that we hit regular. Clean, clear walking and full of frogs.

Here in East TN that may be a problem but I would imagine West would be better. Every course back home would have at least 4 ponds on it.

The issue with pollution concerns me though. How much stuff do they put on the grass in golf courses? They keep the grass perfect, so you know there has to be a lot of fertilizing, weed control, pest control going on and those chemicals drain straight to ponds and soak into frog's skin.

Otherwise I would gladly start checking golf course ponds for frogs. I will definitely be fishing some soon. CPR (catch, photo, release)

Three of our ponds were n golf courses.

I seriously doubt in the all the years we gigged that I saw more than half a dozen snakes. We just don't have them in numbers in our county. I always wore tennis shoes and never gave them a thought.
