Friction Call Question

I went online to buy a call today (Derby City) and there were three different choices:
Slate over Slate
Slate over Glass
Aluminum over Glass

What are the pros and cons of each option?
 
I have their al/glass. two of my three last year thought very highly of it! I carry several- some higher, lower, raspier, smoother, louder, etc. I'm not a huge fan of slate b/c it won't run well if it gets wet.
 
Each one will have a different tone or sound. They all work, just some days one will work better than others. I prefer a slate or crystal myself with a cherry or walnut pot. Oh yeah different strikers will produce different sounds from the same call. I normally carry 3 friction calls and 6 different strikers.
 
Jmo but if I was buying a friction call right now there is zero doubt in my mind when I say the first phone call I'd make is to Darrin Dawkins and get an aluminum call from him.

I'm as particular and peculiar about what call I carry and there is not a better call on the market for killing turkeys. Period IMO

This over that, that over this, fancy wood, fancy etching, funky pot, etc etc are things call makers do to lure hunters. The really really great call makers, make simple calls and put all of their time into perfecting each and every call that comes out of their shop. I have half a dozen Dawkins friction calls and every one is identical in sound. IMO that is the true mark of a great call.

If you want a call that looks cool, is made of 1000 year old wood, comes with a snazzy striker etc etc then that's your business and more power to you. But if you want a call that matches a turkeys sound perfectly and is made to murder birds then look up Darrin, he only makes about 100 calls a year so act fast if you're interested

the problem with a Darrin Dawkins call is the last time i checked they are up near $200.


For the money David Holloran calls are prob my favorite right now but man calls are such a personal choice you just have to go try some and see what you like (Derby makes a good one as well imo)

Slate over Slate usually has a much more dull and lower tone due to the density of each piece however the pot wood will also make a difference.

Slate over Glass is a very popular choice (one of my fav) and will have a more crisp higher pitch sound usually due to the sound bouncing off the hard glass though again the pot wood will also make a difference

Aluminum is going to be loud and really carry in the woods, usually a more high pitch and will really bark! Issue with aluminum some have is it can squeak some and is easy to slide the striker rather then really cut it on the surface. Aluminum can get some getting use but you shouldn't let that stop you from trying one out.

Darrin's calls are not loud, they can be if you crank on them, but so can any friction call. I bought two friction calls from Darrin last year for $100, but would pay $500 or more for one if that is what it took. I am a creature of habit and if I have confidence in a call it doesn't matter the cost or wait time to get one. I firmly believe in hunting with a call that you like, and to heck with the rest.

There is a bunch of quality calls on the market, the trouble is deciding what surface and maker fits your style.
 
I'll have to look back into it then, I could have swore when I looked at getting one it was pretty expensive
 
I like the slate over glass to. but I have everyone except the aluminum over glass. but im about to order one. I think each call has a place in a persons vest.
 
I have a nice fancy Lights Out pot call and love it , but I have killed a lot of birds with 14.99 pot calls from wal-mart! One in particular but not gonna let the cat out the bag!

Slate witch from hs? I have one that's one of the best sounding calls I have heard. Its killed a lot of birds.
 
I got a slate over glass , I order from oak ridge custom calls . It's one of tfe best sounding calls I had in awhile . I wouldn't take nothing for it .

jimmy with oak ridge makes some very very very good calls highly recommend his calls.

Curious as why you would want or need six calls that sound the same.
 
I've learned over the years that if you find something you like you better load up, if not they will stop making it or change it like wood haven did with their calls. Despite what most think or believe I don't buy into carrying 85 different calls. If a call sounds good to me and turkeys react well to it then that's all I need and so far a warehouse full of dead turkeys agreed.
