I was talking with someone yesterday about processing and I mentioned how I hate leaving that little bit of meat in the stuffing tube of the grinder and having to clean it all out. He told me to take 1/2 a sleeve of saltine krackers and run it through at the end.

Today, I finished grinding my wife's mule deer. Son of a gun, it worked! Not flawlessly but it definitely made a huge difference. Most of the fat n silver skin was out of the grinder tube/auger/blade/head. I lost maybe 1/2" of meat in the stuffing tube that was mixed with the crackers. What mess that was left was super easy to clean.

I'm usually late to the party so many of you might know about this. Or have a better tip.

IDK, I just feel like I won the lottery😛

What if you don't use the grinder to stuff
Same difference. It gets a lot of that meat/sinew/fat, etc out of the auger/blade/plate. The hard part for me, to clean, is everything but the stuffing tube.
The stuffing tube usually has good meat in it so you just have to use something to get it out, the crackers help push it out.

That don't clean the stuffing tube out on my stuffer tho. Ice cubes takes care of the grinder. But if you use a stand alone stuffer how do you clean that meat out without wasting any.

IDK a good way yet. Ive only used a paper towel and wooden kitchen spoon flipped around to push it out. Then a bristle brush with hot soapy water to actually clean.

When I make sausage I'm usually left with a little meat in bottom of stuffer and tube. That's frustrating too. Time to discover another life hack!

Also, the one time I used ice cubes it stalled my grinder out so I never tried it again. It was a smaller one though.

I've learned one cube at a time in the grinder lol. My stuffer is fairly larger in diameter and it leaves quite a bit behind. Kinda aggravating. If you were doing patties of some kind it might be ok, but using casings for sausages and snack sticks is a pain.

That's my only gripe about the stuffer. I can do an entire batch of sausage in one go and it does great but there's always about 1/4 sausage worth left in tube and bottom of cylinder.

I always keep a handful of scraps to push out the last of the good meat from the auger. I like the idea of using hot dog buns though!

I started processing my own deer back in the 80's and used my mother's hand crank grinder. She taught me to use stale bread or similar to clean it out. Been doing it ever since. Have upgraded to electric grinder btw! Lol!
