I took this guy last year and recently got him back. I think he has a very unique color and the taxidermist done a fine job on him.

That is totally AWESOME.

We are going to try to get one for my son this fall. What general area did you shoot it? They are few and far between in the east part of TN.

Bob Tail, I to am from east TN. If you are specifically hunting fox squirrels I would recommend Claiborne and Hancock counties. Seems there are more in those two counties than anywhere else I have hunted in east TN. I also occasionally kill a few in Hawkins and Grainger co. I actually took this fox squirrel last October in a White oak in Hawkins co.

Have had some similar experiences both there and in some other big bottom woodlot type settings in West & Middle TN. In some areas (particularly in extreme West TN) the fox squirrels greatly outnumber the grays.

fox squirrels typically acct for about a 1/3 of my kills. that color phase is very unique
 
I guess it all depends on where you're hunting. There seem to be different color phases in different parts of the country. When I hunted in Ms around Ackerman most I saw were the color of yours. Another place I hunted in Tipton County had a lot of white squirrels. Around home they just look like typical fox squirrels with no added colorization on the heads except for the old, white headed ones. Pretty squirrels for sure.

I would say fox squirrels make up about 25 percent of my total annual harvest. Of the places I hunt some have absolutely none, others a few here and there, while other places are loaded with them.

I would sure like to get a white fox squirrel one day to mount. The taxidermist who done mine said about 4 or 5 years ago a guy from Georgia brought him 2 fox squirrels that were nearly solid white, except both had black heads and black tipped tails. Said they were almost identical and the guy said he killed them together out of the same hickory tree.
 
I think fox squirrels are edge animals. Over the years I've found more of them along the inside edges of the timber I've hunted than into the interior. Corn fields next to the timber along with mast trees along the edge are the ticket to seeing them. That's not to say they can't be killed anywhere but they act different than greys.
 
That's really cool. Here's a pic of one that came down to check me out while bowhunting in Hickman County a couple years ago. He had similar coloration with the black face and belly.

Sometimes it's just to easy killing those big fox squirrels. To many times, i've shot a grey and would have a fox squirrel come running down from the top of a tree and get on end of a low hanging limb, bouncing around and barking at me like a fool.

Some of my favorite hunts are killing fox squirrels cutting in the tops of cypress trees.
