Fox Squirrel Advice Needed

I've only hunted gray squirrels, but today saw a strange fox squirrel. Very large but with an all white face. Kind of like this guy, below.

Questions:
How big is their territory? 100yds, 1/2 mile?

I saw him at noon today. Is this unusual, or are they more monring types?
Should I go back to the same area at the same time to find him? Or, could he have moved on?

I used to see one that was so old he was almost totally gray. I saw him every time I hunted that stand one year

I don't think they move across huge areas unless the food base changes. If you saw it recently, its probably still around.

Agreed. I see them regularly along river bottoms.

He should live and frequent the same area. Greys are more interior woods squirrels. Foxes like the edges of timber and fields better.

I don't know much about where to find them but I did shoot one last year and I definitely like the taste of gray squirrels better. Just figured I'd give you a heads up. I did see mine in the middle of the day as well. I was actually walking trying to kick up some rabbits and this thing was barking its head off at me. I followed the sound and saw him sitting on a limb looking right at me barking. He eventually stopped barking

It was a LOT tougher to clean too than gray squirrels are.

I went back but just as I set up the fog rolled in and then it started pouring.
Went back yesterday but decided to try for a deer first, and then move on to the squirrel's area.
Got the deer and then didn't have time for the squirrel. Maybe next week.

See Lots of fox squirrels with white stripe on face/nose like the one in your picture when I have hunted Lincoln, Moore, Giles, Bedford Counties. I think that as they get older they have more white on their faces.

I'm covered up in them here in Humphreys. I see a lot with black faces and a lot with white faces, I think it might be genetics or maybe slightly different breed whether the white face or black but I don't know for sure.

I fish at Lake Talquin in Florida and they have a strain of solid white ones there,pretty neat animals.

I would bet you that fox squirrel uses the same den tree almost every day, and is still very close to where you saw him (if you haven't already gotten him).

If you're still looking for him, I'd concentrate my hunting within 100 yards of where you saw him, and more in the middle of the day (just sit there like you're deer hunting, don't be slipping around much). In my experiences, fox squirrels move around more during mid-day, and they are much more "stealthy" than grays, often getting overlooked by hunters, especially if any grays are in the same area. Many squirrel hunters will concentrate on grays mainly early morning and late evening, missing out on when the fox squirrels move around more beginning later in the morning and mid-day.

Also, grays are more likely to "bolt" and jump or run when they see you, causing you to see and pursue them. Fox squirrels are more likely to just "freeze", remain motionless, and unless you saw him first, you may not see him at all.
