My neighbor plowed his dove field this week so I did a little walking the other day. Had a little luck and saved a few artifacts.. but I stumbled across this 1783 Spanish/Mexican 1 reales coin too. Someone a long time ago stuck a nail through it and must have had it as a charm or necklace. And I thought it was just a muddy dime and almost didnt pick it up... Now I need a rain!

The older coins are often "holed". They were not worn on necklaces. Instead, the lack of pockets on clothing of the time period led to them having to use other means to keep up with coins. One of the more popular ways was to hole them and run a string through the hole and sew it into the inner flap of the pocket or vest.
