Food Plots Forecasting fall food plot costs

I'm really concerned. I know a lot of cereal grains (wheat, oats, rye) come from overseas. Those are probably going to be really hard to find (or high priced). Question is, where do brassica seeds (turnips, radishes, rape) come from? May be a viable option, given that they can be planted at a few pounds per acre. $15/acre vs $40/acre. We now have 30 acres of food plots .. anyone know?

I think a lot of the brassica seeds come from OR and WA area. From what I'm seeing already, most buck on a bag seed already showing a increase of $2-5 a bag. Some of the clovers I've seen $15-20 a bag increase.

A combo 2:1 of wheat and oats is and apply 10-10-10 up to the budget ceiling has always been the [most?] economical way to plant effective food plots. With diesel, seed and fertilizer at all time highs, this will be the only solution to those with modest budgets, like me. I hope you have a large club if you are planting 30 acres. I remember back in 2005 or so when fertilizer hit $13 a bag and we were all upset at the cost of planting 25 ac! We mowed all the plots but only planted half of the ones that were 5+ acres large.

I think the availability of wheat seed is going to be the big question for fall food plot planting. I'll still use my standard mixture IF I can find enough wheat seed, and the cost isn't sky-high.

I hadn't bought any seed oats....but I know feed oats (rolled oats) are now at $30 per bag....they went from....$17 to $24 to $27 to $30....and $30 was two weeks ago at TSC....not sure what they are today? The cost for everything Ag related is just disturbing.....the 2.5 gallon of glysophate is holding at 134.99.....its crazy.

I hear that. The wheat won't be cheap, but neither are the Buckwheat, Austrian Winter Peas, and Crimson Clover I use in my plots. Won't "break the bank" to plant my fall food plots, but it's going to be a lot more than it used to be. Probably go from $600 to $1,000 total for my plots.

Almost glad I only have 7.25 acres to plant.

I bought some wheat about two weeks ago and it was double the price than the year before. I paid 16 bucks per bag but only needed two. I still have some left from last year. I had also bought some of the seed mix bags , wheat, turnips , oats and clover and put them up for this season. I still have about 20 pounds of buckwheat left also I can mix in. That's all I am putting out and should do just fine. Pretty much all I ever put out once I cut my buckwheat and sunflowers from spring. Yep, it's definitely gonna cost more this year especially the diesel to do it all.

I have been slowly getting clover established in most of my plots as a solid base the last few years. I hope to do a wheat, rye, and oats mixture in most of the plots but we will see what time and money allow in a few months. I think most people had a booming acorn crop last year, so that makes me want to plant food plots a little bit more this year.

Last year, we had the biggest acorn crop I've seen in the 35 years I've been hunting my property. This year does not look good. This summer, I've been seeking out branches blown out of oak trees and checking them for acorn buds. So far, White Oaks, very, very few acorn buds. A bit more on the Reds. But my guess is we are going to have a poor acorn year this year on my place. Strangely, I've been seeing what looks like a second good acorn crop in row for the Nashville area.

I'll need 15 bags of VNS Wheat, 3 each of Buckwheat, Austrian Winter Peas and Crimson Clover. That's a bit pricey, but not like all the guys with 20 to 30 acres to plant. That would truly hurt.

I've got some seed leftover, but will most definitely need to buy more. At least I have sorghum out, so they'll have those heads (as long as this hot, dry spell didn't kill it. I want green coming up underneath it. We need to network once it's time to buy

Tsc dropped the gly to $115 for awhile and now back up to $134. Coop was $110 last week. About to have to get more.

We go through a farmer to get wheat and he doesn't have enough contracted it all. Called another one and he is at 10 dollars a bushell we are going ahead and fill up our grain wagon now. I haven't called about oats but it's going to be higher. I am thankful we started doing no til two years ago and only have to make one pass to spray and one pass to plant. We do fertilizer out of a four-wheeled spreader. What really going to be interesting is the crops it self for people that hunt ag our corn is around here is about to be lost if we don't get any rain very quick.

I just a recent report that with the drought, wheat farmers are seeing 40-60% reduction in crop. Sounds like wheat prices will be going up more.

Yeah I had heard that most of the companies were having trouble with seed availability. Lot of the food plot companies were having to change their mixes to have seed in the bags. I went by the COOP yesterday, they were out of winter wheat, rye and oats. Said they didn't know when they would get it again.

Gotta be careful getting grains too early if you don't have a way to keep weevils out anyways

In the past, I've had to wait until mid-August for the Co-ops to get in their first shipments of winter grains. We will see this year.
