1st one is butterweed.
2nd is mayapple.

I'm not positive about butterweed, but I don't think either are very high on a deer's grocery list.

yes, I noticed them last weekend. I will check where I think I planted some turnips and see if that is where they are concentrated, of course by then someone will tell us what it is..hopefully.

Bottom is mayapple for sure. The other one I dont know, and my ID book is at home.

I have to say i dont believe thats a turnip. Look at the leaves...I havent seen a turnip with alternate leaves. should be a single leaf. just an observation. interesting!

Top pic is turnips flowering and going to seed - I have two plots that are real pretty right now as they are a solid bright yellow. I was surprised at getting that much survival of the turnips - the deer had those plots (mix of oats and turnips) mowed down to pretty much bare ground by the end of February.

Bottom is mayapple.

You may have a plot full of it, but it ain't a turnip! Don't take my word for it, here's what the USDA's website shows.

Mick, I had done that(looked in my book and on-line) last weekend and it is not the same thing. It looks very close though. I will try to get a better pic tomorrow and post on Sunday.

I completely missed that one right in the middle of the first pic. :blush: The first is a brassica, probably turnips since that is what you planted. The second is butterweed, and the third is mayapple. I'll have to look at the pics more carefully next time.

AH! i did the same thing... i didnt see the turnip in the clover...

Just pull one of them up - if there is a woody turnip root (most often a thick white tap root with a purple tinge to the top of it, not an actual round ball) it is a turnip. I'm going off of memory, but I don't think butterweed has the same type of thickened central tap root.

Top is Brassica.

The center is Butterweed, it grows in wet or damp areas, I've even got in growing in small creeks. It is a preferred by deer in my area.

The last is Mayapple.

Top pic looks like what I got in my turnip plot the following spring...figured it was the roots sprouting.
