Do the deer eat it late in the season? Do the birds not rip all of your seeds out midway through season. Birds are doing a number on our fields.

Yes deer will eat it to some extent later in the year and yes the birds will absolutely pound it. We plant enough that all the critters can enjoy it but for little patches, birds will be on there all day every day. And don't let a migrating flock of blackbirds get in there...can't even hear yourself think they keep up so much racket.

When do you typically plant? I am thinking I would be better off planting later than I did.

I planted an acre the 1st week of June. Caught some timely rains and it did very well. But the birds are already having there way with it.

I've been thinking about planting some next year. Been doing some reading up on it and they say deer won't touch it till it makes a head or sometimes till it dries down.Which if you timed it right would be excellent late season food plot.

It's really easy to pull off a good crop too. Deer will use it some in the dough stage but generally there's so much other food at that time they leave it alone for the most part which is good because it leaves some food on the table for late season.

Planted our middle of May and birds are taking a toll. There was some planted around the house about mid July and it has made well. I guess I will try it again next year and plant a little later. It is has been the most trouble/worry thing I planted so I guess it is worth another shot. Threw it out and fertilized and never touched it again, made a great stand. I babied the corn and it turned out ok....
