For the grass men--circles in the yard????

There is something happening in my yard that I do not understand. In two places there are circles of dead grass. One is about 15/20 feet in diameter and the other is about 8/10. The grass slowly dies and is gone in a couple of years. Only bare soil and a little moss left. The circles are more like rings about a foot or two in width. The interior of the circles are not changed, healthy grass. Just the strip around the circumference. The circles are in part shade on a slight hill and fairly close to a tree line. Been there a few years and nothing grows in the rings.
I have not used fert--chemicals--ar anything that I can think of that would cause them. I know about designs in crops in England and such Et's but this ifs for real.
Any of you guys dealing with growing thins got any ideas. We live on several acres--have a garden---5 food plots---and about 7 acres we mow so we are not greenhorns---I don't think. Just puzzled. Thanks for your help.

Sharpshooter are you serious about the fairy ring deal--never heard of it..

In the back of my mind I think there is something about lawn circles but cannot pull it out or may just be wishful thinking.
Going to talk to the UT Ag station at Jackson about it, they are supposed to be the experts.

Fairy rings are associated with mushrooms. You also have necrotic ring spot that can do it. Both are fungal. Look it up, its no joke.

I was thinking the same thing

your might want to try this, find some "activated charcoal" and sprinkle it on the area in question, the activated charcoal will draw out any impurities in the soil, many factories keep it for any type of spill, this may not be your case but its worth a try and it does nothing but help, it will not hurt non trouble areas

We have a beautiful pasture every spring. Once it gets hot and dry, you can see where the soil is thin pretty quick.

After reading about Fairy rings it is what I have no doubt, thanks for all the helpful information everyone.

Google has a lot of information about them and how to cope with them--cure might be harder to achieve. I will take soil sample--adjust ph level---water correctly then hope for the best.

Glad Its in my yard and not in the food plots......My boss Miss Karen might not agree with the last statement.

More than likely the result of fungal growth. The fungus body grows actively at the outer edges and can be very large (Some over a square mile in size for one individual). What you are seeing is the result of the fungal mycelium killing grass at the edges as it extracts nutrients from the grass. If it is a mushroom producing variety (Basidimycota) you will see the mushrooms in a ring along the outer edge in a ring commonly called a fairy ring. If it is a fungus that does not produce mushrooms, then you may never see it without some microscopic analysis.

As the lawn ages and the grass develops deeper root systems, the problem will go away. The fungus will still be there, but the grass will be strong enough to handle it.

How old is the lawn? Have you ever fertilized with starter fertilizer? If not I would suggest you do to stimulate root growth without stimulating top growth.

It is about 10 years old before that it was a cow pasture for a long time. No I have never used anything but triple 12 or 15 as fertlizer and not much of that. Where the rings are there is no grass at all ---hope to put some k-31 tall fescue there this fall after it cools.
When my 10 year old nephew visits next week I am going to show the rings to him and tell him it's some sort of vodoo spell and that we need to put a fire ring in the center of it and cook some hot dogs and say some magical chants and they will go away before next year. he will like that I think---and I do hope they are gone by then.

we had some rings of grass die on our baseball field and i cannot remember for the life of me what it was called....ill talk to the other coach and see what it was...was nothing we could do about it
