Female mammals have XX chromosomes. Males have XY. Its a coinflip whether the offspring get an X from their dad, making them female offspring, or a Y, making them male. Momma throws Xs 100% of the time, regardless of age. Since the daddy's gene determins male or female, the doe's age can have nothing to do with it the sex of offspring.

I would gamble and say this is an association and not a cause and effect.

Look at it this way, as humans we are sexually balanced. Meaning the male to female ratio is about 1:1. Every single day people in developed nations try to plan for a certain gender off spring...but in the end the ratio is still 1:1. So would it really matter if older doe deer had all female? In reality (or the wild) how would we truly know to make an actual difference and if we did we would likely screw it up anyways.

Old wise tales seem to always make a scene. For instance; my wife and I recently had our first child. My wife ( who is a complete nerd) knows darn near exactly the date she conceived. That date was early on in ovulation and some theorist say that that the X chromosome (female) is tougher than the Y, so the further away from ovulation the greater the chances for a female are...guess what? We had a girl, so this "association" worked for us...but it is far from an exact science (albeit we did not plan that either).

With that said, is it possible older doe deer are bred longer before ovulation than younger doe? Possibly. Is it a true natural cause and effect? IMO...only God knows that answer and he keeps us busy trying to figure it out.

Not possible, the male sperm determines the sex of the offspring. Females carry two X chromosomes. That is what makes them females. Males carry an X and a Y. That is what makes them male. Females can only contribute an X to the offspring. Makes can contribute either an X or a Y. If the father contributes an X in the sperm the offspring is female. If the father contributes a Y in the sperm, the offspring is male. The father determines the sex of the offspring, not the mother.

True, all the male does is provide sperm but implanting and fertilization happens within the female. Saying the male determines the gender is a broad statement if not fully understood.

I did not read the article so I am not sure exactly what they were talking about.
