Food Plot Virgin- need to work fast though

So hinted to my wifes uncle about putting some food plots on his land and he smiled and said " I was wondering if you were ever going to ask me".

So, I know I need to get something in the ground within the next three weeks for sure- preferably sooner. I won't have time to get the soil tested and get results back. The areas are pasture and have grass in them now. I know I'm taking a chance on losing some money by not following the food plot golden rules to a tee but for the sake of time can I get away with simply cutting, discing and planting seed just for this season?

One pasture is about 10 acres and I want to do about an acre of that along a tree line (gets full midday sun) and the other would be only about a 1/4 acre plot with the same sun.

Any advice is good for me.

Being pasture grass, you really need to spray with GLY 4 after mowing. Then throw in about 250# acre of pellatized lime after disking; broadcast wheat, rye (grain not grass) & brassica. Drag something over to cover.

Yep sray it with gly,lime as much as you can,and pray for rain.Then order the QDMA food plot book,really helps.BTW soil tests only take a week or so to get back from the co op.

My problem is that I can only get down there once a week. I'm going to get my wifes uncle to cut it but he doesn't have a sprayer. So I'll be doing so w/back pack sprayer.

I guess my point is, can I do the minimum and expect the minimum for this season and then hit it like I'm supposed to next year?

Okay i have done this several times with good results. Spray the ground with round up. It saves so much time disking. Disk the ground a couple times and then roll or cultipack or drag with chain link fence to smooth out the clods. Sow fertilizer and seed and lightly cover seeds and wait for rain.

No,will take months to work,but the sooner the better

Dont know about them blending it,but they have most every thing,white/red clover,chickory,oats makes a dang good food plot,IMO

If he's going to mow it, I would spay Gly heavy, then go back a week later disc heavy and seed heavy with a clover mix and brassicas. Then sit back and see what happens.

Do whatever you like,but plants need to be growing for Gly to work well,aint much growing around here,as dry as it is,may need to wait till you see a little green up after mowing.

I'm with ya but I feel like I'm pressed for time. It would be nice to get a little shower this evening to perhaps start a little new growth.

I sprayed this past Saturday and it is already dying off pretty good.

I think you will be fine.
