Food plot mixture

Last year we planted 2 acres of Oats, AWP, and clover and then a acre of Biologic green patch plus. This year we are going to plant about 6 acres of plots in the same area. I know we are going to put oats, AWP, and clover but was wondering about mybe adding something else to the mixture. Maybe some DER and turnips or something. What do some of you food plot gurus think we should add to the mixture. Last year they absolutly tore up the oats, peas, and clover. But didn't hardly touch the Biologic green patch plus with the Brassicas. Just trying to get some ideas as we will be planting here in about 2 weeks and was wondering what you thought we should add.

Go with what you planted last year if it works minus the biologic. If it works stick with it. You might think about trying a small strip of rape nearby to if they like it.

fyi- tried biologic green patch plus once .. deer never touched it. Still have couple of bags in the freezer and it will probably stay there.

What kind of clover did you use last year?

Did you see the deer hit the rape before or after a frost?
I planted some last year and it was gone before the first frost.

I plant corn, beans, oats, clover, rape, and a different kind of clover... Just finished my plot today... Can't wait... My buddy planted his last weekend and it's already almost foot high!!!

I planted some last year and it was gone before the first frost.

Ive seen em eat from the first day of bow season til its gone.

They sure love it After the frost hits it and coverts it to sugar, then it is gone in days from 8 inches tall to the ground level!!!

Personaly I would go on the side and see how it goes. But that is just me, I just like strips. Try it and see how it goes. You can do the rape now and do the oats & peas later if needed. That is one thing about strips. You can plant at differnt times and get the most out of all plantings. One thing for sure is if you watch deer in you plot, you sure can tell if they like it or not.
If you have a peace of chicken wire / fencing make you a utilization cage to go in your main plot and one in the DER. You may be suprized at the results.

If you have 6 acres i highly recommend you plant some of that in a 1 year stand plot or a perennial plot(3 to 5 year). I would plant 1.5 to 2 acres in 1 or the other. You are planting annuals that will die in june right now,.. so focus on year round nutrition.

Heres a good 1 year stand mix..
10 lbs red clover( medium red, redland maxx)
10 lbs arrowleaf clover (apache or arrowleaf)
1 lb chicory
50 lbs oats or wheat

or perennial
7 lbs red clover
5 lbs ladino clover
2 lbs chicory
50 lbs oats or wheat

both mixes are per 1 acre mixes.

I like the 1 year stand mix. Easier to maintain and cost effective.

Me and Tntrapper was talking tonight and we are no thinking about planting last years plot in the same stuff Oats, AWP, and clover. Then planting the new 3 acres in some perenial stuff such as clover and rea grass. Or if you guys have any good perenial plot mixture suggestions.

Here is a pic of a ladino clover & chickory plot I had about two years ago. Notice the 5ft wide strip of rape around the lefthand side. You can also see where the the deer have nipped the chickory.
