FOC: How Much

There a lot of people over on AT trying get over 15% FOC by using heavy fixed blade heads.

Ive always thought anywhere from 10-12% FOC was good.

What's the hype?

Hunting wise I use the rule 10%-15%, 3D and indoor I recommend 7%-10%. Higher FOC equates to better penetration when the arrow impacts the target due to the fact that the arrow will not flex as much as it would with a lower FOC and squander potential energy�that lowered loss of energy is why they trying to get as high as possible.

I'm working on putting together some Gold Tip Velocity Pros 300.

Instead of going to 125 grain heads that will give me optimal spine, I will use the 20 grain Gold Tip weights that screw in the inserts.

According to OT2 that will put me at 14.17% FOC. Thats higher than the 11.5% FOC I was shooting before.

That sounds like it should be close to the sweet spot, as long as your slightly overspined currently. There is a thin line between getting the maximum amount of foc by adding weight to the front and weakening the spine too much�one thing some of those guys don't think about while they are worrying about foc.

I also use the rule of 10-15%. I just started to say to watch going to heavy or you will weaken the spine of your arrow. But TnDeer Guy beat me to it. If you add weight to the front you weaken the spine and if you add weight to the back end you stiffen it up. You can change the foc by going to feathers instead of vanes, 3 inch vanes instead of 4 inch. Every little thing can change the dynamics of the arrow. Once you find the sweet spot you can actually be shooting a heavier arrow but shooting faster because you are getting the most efficiency from your equipment.
