Those of you who have flown for turkey trips, what're your tips for flying and return flights with your weapon and turkey meat/fans etc. Thank you in advance

I fly a lot. I'd recommend a buying a good gun case, the airline workers are rough with them. Pelican vault is a good one. Make sure you buy TSA approved locks so they can open your case and inspect it and however many lock holes your case has you have to have a lock for each of them.
I always make sure the place I'm staying at has a freezer. I bring an extra bag with me to put the frozen meat in. I check that bag and the bottom of the plane stays cold enough it stays frozen until I get back. I never have any issues.

Flew to Dallas a month ago with my buddy who had 2 black rifles and 2 handguns in a pelican style case (may have been a pelican). He bought 2 wheels and bolted them on one end and a handle on the other to roll it to the counter from the parking garage. I carried it some of the time and worked well. Also as mentioned you have to have TSA locks for every spot on the case. He took it to the counter, opened it, filled out a piece of paper and they put part in the case and gave him the other. That was it no issues. Ammo was in the check-on bags and no issues with it either.

Your gonna be required to show weapon and that it is unloaded . You will sign a statement swearing so
Make sure it is !
You have to check that gun in personally w an attendant
Upon arrival at destination most airports you will be required to show ID to get your weapon . A lot of times you have to go to airlines office in baggage area as most don't send it out on the carousel

Pretty well covered above and add the fact that Ammo has to be in separate checked bag in original packaging or equivalent. I had a box of TSS come open and spill in my checked bag last yr and they confiscated the whole box, as it was considered loose ammo. Cost me a $100 for that box of 5 to come open!
TSA lock for every hole on a strong case (Pelican). Allow a little more time than usual. Southwest has been great, United not so much. Tape your ammo box lid in your checked bag (place in a boot if you can).

Not exactly true, I have flown several times and have always had my ammo in the same case as my firearm. Never an issue.
To fly with a firearm and ammunition, firearms must be unloaded and packed in a locked hard-sided container as checked baggage, while ammunition should be in a container designed for ammunition and can be stored in the same case as the firearm. Always declare your firearm and ammunition at the airline check-in counter.

I've flown with a pistol a few times, and did all of the previously mentioned locks, allow inspection, etc. I then placed the pistol case in a checked bag, the bag was tagged, and good to go. The best part was while everyone else was waiting on the luggage carousel, an attendant rolled my bag to me and I was good to go.

yeah I did this as well. i just put the box of turkey shells in with the gun a few times just so I knew it was all together.
I used a case that allowed me to custom cut out the foam to fit my gun exactly, I just cut another square in it to fit the ammo as well

It does not. Just as long as the ammo is in a case [box] designed for ammo.
I hand load mine as well. I just put them in a old shotgun shell box I had laying around. They are not checking the name on the box and the ammo inside it, just has to be a box designed for ammo.

I did have an attendant (United) give me a hard time about the gap in the case with the latches undone, but the locks were in place. She could get her fingers into the case, said that was a no-go. I was using the little cable locks and had to loop them through the hole twice. No issues leaving Knoxville, but coming back from Utah, they made a stink about it. Other than that, I have never had issues flying with guns.
United gave me a hard time over this leaving Nashville. Get some of those post type locks. You can take up any gap by using a washer.

'Personal item' I carry on is a large backpack. My expensive stuff (binocs,etc) go it it, along with any remaining clothing needed for the trip. As big as possible, yet can still barely fit under the seat in front of you.
On the way back, fan, legs, beard gets packed in the gun case. 1 breast gets eaten on the hunt, the other breast and legs are given away.

I usually keep 4 or 5 for myself a year, and the rest i typically give to friends.
I also give away some of my homemade wild turkey kielbasa to friends who give me their legs and thighs they dont want.

Well covered above, one thing I do like is the rectangle skb cases. I can pack a bow, shotgun and rifle or several 2 PC rods in it along with most of my gear. I have had the same case for 15+ years and had worked really well and held up to the baggage handlers.
Not this guy lol. I've offered it to landowners before but hardly any take me up on it. Most people out west I've ran across don't want anything to do with turkey meat, they just don't know how to cook it and I ain't telling them any different
.I also have alpha gal so I'm not as inclined to give any meat away as I used to be.

I own an oversize 2 rifle skb case. Its fabulously indestructible. Flown with it to Argentina and out west.
Downside, that joker is HEAVY... to the point where you have to be careful not to exceed the 49.5lb packing weight.
Lately I've been using a cheaper pelican knockoff. Not nearly as sturdy, but 10lbs lighter.
Timely as I just hauled my Benelli back to my house in Idaho from Knoxville via United Airlines. No issues. I bout a Meijia break down case with foam inside. Very sturdy but about half the price as a Pelican case. Three handles and a set of sturdy wheels as I usually miss the hotel shuttle and need to walk about 1/4 mile to the motel to p/u my vehicle. Very positive snap locks with four slots for TSA locks. I declared the gun at check in, took the declaration form and hauled it over to the TSA guys they x-rayed it then I opened it, showed them the gun, put the form in then put the TSA locks on. Piece of cake. I did have to show ID in Boise as the United lost baggage attendant was looking for it and met me at the bulky items luggage claim. No issues other than United will not allow you to check in online. You have to check in at the counter.
