I shot my first squirrel 35 years ago.. have hunted them here in Tn ever since.. never in my life have I seen a flying squirrel other than on TV.. last night our housecat brought one and left it on our doorstep.. My daughter got out her animal book and it said on the first line of the description that they only come out at night...??? have you ever seen one??

My buddy and I shot 2 of them out of the same tree when we were kids hunting out by his grandmothers close to aedc. Those were the first I'd ever seen and so far the last. Neat little creatures. :)

Quiet a few in Tenn. No hunting season for them however.

Mostly nocturnal...notice the huge eyes.

Sometimes will nest in bluebird boxes.

Some areas have lots of them.
 
We killed 12 of them one weekend. Several years ago, they got in our cabin and they were everywhere. I guess we killed the whole colony because we havent seen one there since.

They are in my girlfriends dads cabin as we speak in Jackson County. I told him I would plug the hole where they are gettin in the next time I get out that way
 
I have killed 4 male flying squirrels recently with a Victor rat trap in our attic space and I still hear them crawling in the walls at night, so it's time to put out the trap yet again. I wonder if there are any females or if it's a bachelor group :D

I've also caught a couple outside with a victor trap several months ago. But now they are getting into the house.

Unfortunately I have seen hundreds of them. I am a telephone man, and the flying rodents love to nest in the aerial cable boots that are on the telephone lines. When you open up a boot that has a nest full, 10-20 will scurry, fly, or fall out as you open it. Its quite an experience to have a bunch of flying sqirrels scurrying down your body while you are on a ladder on a telephone pole, it makes staying on the ladder very difficult.
 
My grandfather had one nest in his bluebird box once. You could go knock on it with your pocket knife and he would stick his head out to say hello.
 
Carlos hit it on the head. They are called Sugargliders, and can fetch up to 150.00 each at pet stores. I had one to come in our back door about 12 years ago. It was a wild looking creature. Only after we let it go did we figure out what it was and how much they were worth.
 
I used to see them a lot when I was a kid, last one I seen was about 25 years ago when me and some friends went camp'n, some one heard something in the trees and broke out a flash light, they must have had a nest in the pine trees.
 
The Sugar glider (Petaurus breviceps) is a small gliding marsupial native to eastern and northern mainland Australia, New Guinea, ....

Native flying squirrels would be illegal to possess or sell, before anyone starts seeing $$$$.
 
Think there is one in my barn right now cant tell exactly I only see him way up in the rafters at night and can barely see him that good he wont come down close enough to tell cool critters for sure!
 
Found one hung in the barbed wire fence last year. I guess he was gliding and got caught. Very much alive by the way. Used some really thick leather gloves to get him loose.
 
My uncle use to cut timber, and he got 4 babies out of a nest one time. my aunt raised them and gave them to us we kept them for awhile and then turned them loose

there seem to be a bunch of them in this county. we had them in our chimney and no telling how many our dogs have treed over the years. never killed one though. cutest things i have ever seen.
 
I have saw a few over the years.

This past December, there were 5 nesting in my well house.

I had to check the water one night and they scared the crap out me before I realized what they were. :)
