Fly Fishing on Old Hickory

This was an unexpected weekend of sharing times with my son. He showed up at the house yesterday just as I was about to start mowing lawn. He said "Let's go play some golf!" So we did.

We got home around 5:30 pm, cooked and ate some steaks, then headed to his brother-in-law's house and played Texas Hold'em till 1 am.

Since Joe and I were the two big winners, we celebrated by getting up at 6 am and headed to Old Hickory to catch some bluegills for breakfast. You can see who won the "biggest Bass" contest.

Joe got the last laugh after that little Smallmouth. Here's a video clip of the end of a long fight. He was fishing the shoreline for Bluegills on a light flyrod with tiny bug, when something grabbed it and headed for the deep water.

Seeing a lot of Fly-R fishermen on the big ditch lately. Most are crappie and gill fishin. I'm surprised the drum didn't hit the strike indicator.

I've never seen so many fish hit the bobber as today. We were just too lazy to switch to poppers or rubber spiders.

For those who have never cast a flyrod in warm water...you should add it to the list of things to do before you die. I was one who fished all conventional gear until 4 years ago. Now I take flyfishing gear along with my other stuff on all my trips to the lake.

Flyrods are great if your shoulder is healthy. I use to catch quite a few smallmouth on streams with a fr.
