I recently bought a blue/syn ML-II, but was having serious accuracy problems with it. It wouldn't stay on paper, much less group. Changed scope to make sure, but this is not the problem. Seems that the problem diminished when I put the sandbags under the action screw instead of the front of the stock. My groups aren't great, but 3" or so. Tried 31.cc and 3.4cc of 5744, MMP black sabots and 300gr xtp mags, as well as 300gr hornady hps, orange sabots and same powder combos. Sounds like this thing has some picky bedding/stock issues. Any ideas, Savage experts?
 
I noticed you were using the scoops as opposed to weighing your charges? Go ahead and weigh the charges and you will find that your groups will tighten up a bit. Also, try loads of 43 gr and 44 gr of 5744 and that should work for you.

Lastly, are your scope bases touching your recoil lug? Check to make sure this isn't the issue....If so, this can produce erratic performance.

And make sure the mounting screws on the scope bases aren't bottoming out. I have the synthetic stock and haven't had any accuracy isssues with it when shooting off hand, bench, or a(pillow) lol

How much time are you giving the gun between shots to cool down?

I am giving it at least 5 minutes to cool between shots, the mounts are rock solid. The DNZ Game Reaper mounts on it now are the 2nd set of mounts that I have tried. I checked and made sure that they are not touching the recoil lug. I have tried measuring the loads at 43gr, as well, and saw a little improvement, but I have just about narrowed it down to the stock. I will revisit this after season when I ahve more time to tweak and experiment with a load. 3" groups are deer hunting accurate for a muzzleloader, but not what I expect from a $600 gun. My 45/70 lever gun is far more accurate than this. Too close to season to tweak much now, as I have a ML draw hunt coming up in a month, but I was already thinking of a new wood stock. I was just wondering if there was a way to bed it or stiffen it up, or if others had had this problem and there was a simple floating/stiffening trick to be done. Where can new stocks be had for these? Thanks all for the help

Try this.

Make sure all your action screws are snugged down.

Put the Ramrod back in place even for range work.

I personally wouldn't take 3" groups to the field but one has to do what ones got to do after all it is yours not mine. ;) :cool:
 
Hmmmm...... I NEVER shoot mine with the ramrod in! As soon as I step in the stand the ramrod comes out. I cant stand the way it puts pressure on the forearm.
 
I'd guess the key is to shoot it with the ramrod in or out depending on how you intend to hunt with it. Since I do some still hunting on occassion, I need to leave mine in since that is the way it will be in the field. I usually have a range rod when I am sighting in or shooting.

Good tip on making sure it is the same. I'm thinking I sighted it in with the ramrod out the last time I shot it (didn't have the range rod), so I better check the zero with it in.

A consistent option:

Bed the ramrod channel and carry a break down rod in your pack.
