I don't fish much during deer season, but try to go once every couple of weeks or so. Today looked like it would be good. my fishin buddy usually has great luck on overcast days. Plus it had warmed up a little the past couple days, so I figured it would be good. We hit a good deep hole in a creek that is usually great for largemouth bass in the winter. He lost a big fish that he never saw. I had something break half off my wacky rigged worm. Threw a lipless crank, wacky worm, fat albert grub, trout magnet and crappie magnet. Dang fish were not biting. Watched a couple decent bass show interest in the wacky worm, but they swam on and never got aggressive.

Fishing has sucked for me pretty much all year, for whatever reason. I did manage to get a personal best common carp this summer among a few others, and caught a few decent fish here and there, but it sure ain't been what it usually is. Last 2 times I went fishing I got skunked, not even a dang bluegill! What's up with that.... I guess I just always go fishing on the wrong days. Too much deer hunting, wait, there is no such thing as that. Gonna re-paint my boat this winter and get her ready for fishing next spring and summer.

If it were easy it would be called catching!

The weather has a lot to do with how the fish bite. Barometric pressure, sunlight, wind, water flow, and 50 million other factors all can either load the boat or bring the skunk. This time of year they are feeding up for the winter. A shadrap, square bill, or other small crank bait like a bandit are great choices. We caught 9 smallmouth off one bank Saturday and they were crushing a bandit. It turned off and we didn't have another bite the next 2 hours.
 
I don't slow down with a crank bait this time of year. Bandit 200, rapala dt6 or 4... Occasional dt10. Flat side coffin bill, Spro little Jon and a rattle trap. I'll slow the trap down so it's deeper running but the rest, I'll crank normal speed with a 5.3:1. Even with a 6.4:1 I'll crank normal unless it's a trap like I said earlier. The rapala sr5 and sr7 are great choices too. Even an occasional square bill. I put the boat in 6-7 foot of water unless I'm on a bluff then it's about a boat width off the bank. Cast as close to the bank as possible and start cranking. I get the majority of the bites in less than 3 foot of water. If you're missing the first couple feet of the bank you're missing fish in my opinion. Make cast as far in front the boat as possible so you're keeping the bait in the strike zone the longest. Just watch for rocks with the trollIngmotor and big motor... You're gonna hit them from time to time or at least I do.

I want the most aggressive fish I can find is why I crank fast. No need begging them to bite. The bait beating on the bottom or rocks and moving fast will trigger a lot of bites this time of year.
 
I also change baits often. I use a speed clip so it's easy. Sometimes a minor color change will be the trick. Check your line often... The rocks will eat it up. If I'm using spinning I use a 20 series reel and 8 pound test... Some 6 but usually 8. If it's a bait caster I use 12-14 pound even with the smaller cranks. The bandit will hit 5 with 14 pound on a longer cast. I use only mono line for this.
 
Thanks for the advice SilverFox. I gotta get my motor worked on so the boat is out of commission for a while. I'd like to have it good to go with a new paint job by the spring time.
