I got a call this morning concerning a statement I made yesterday about the requirement for immediate release of fish that are illegal to possess due to size or species (sturgeon).
It is OK to take a very quick picture of such a fish as long as it isn't harmed in the process (fingers in gills, held out of the water too long, etc.)

It is illegal to put a fish that can't be possessed on a stringer, in a livewell or cooler, etc. for a picture at a later time. Once you possess an illegal fish like that you are in violation of the fishing regs even if you intend to release it before leaving the water.

I would like to add that even if the fish is legal to possess, riding him around in a livewell half a day so you can take a picture of several at once and then release them isn't a good idea either, although it's legal, and common by a few on this site. If you plan to release it, snap a pic and let it go. We will take your word that all the pics are different fish.
 
The dude that posted the pics broke the law, and ignorance of the law does not make it OK. Hauling fish around on a stringer all day is a death sentence to fish, regardless if you release them at the end of the day, especially this time of the year when water temps are higher. The one fish on the far right of the pic looked dead, its eyes were bulging. I would really like to see more TWRA enforcement on smallmouth streams and rivers, I have seen a bunch of violations over the years in E TN, mainly on the Little Pigeon and Little River.

Guys I know I broke the law, I owned up to it. I even called TWRA myself today to report it, like I was advised to to by SCN. I can assure you it wont happen again. Those fish were caught within 15 minutes or so of each other, and all swam off lively. I have seen dead fish, and know how fish act that are going to eventually die. Again my fault and my apologies for my wrong doings.
 
I got into it with a couple kids last year on the LPR. They were keeping a short smallmouth to put in their pond. They pretty much told me that I was an idiot and they were wildlife and fisheries management students at UT and knew the regulations. I might not know much but I know the length and creel limits for the places I fish even if I don't keep fish.

They may call a pond something different than I do but.. I have never seen a smallmouth live in a pond..
