Im writing a paper on this subject and would like to ask your help in answering a couple of questions.
Would you continue to fish if it was a proven fact that the fish caught suffered and felt pain, say like a person would, from being hooked in the mouth and reeled in?
Do you fish for sport or food and if you do both leave an answer for both aspects.

Thanks

if fish felt pain, i would probably quit most sport fishing but crappies taste too good to quit.

crappies, trout and catfish for food. all others for sport.

I would not quit fishing and I do it for sport and food.

I am torn between that but I fish alot and love the passion and what i was raised on the outdoors. So i would not quite fishing thats just me tho.

I probably would no longer sport fish. I dont belive in killing animals(or fish) just for the sport of it.I would go to food only.

I fish for sport more than food, but wish I would keep them more often for the table. I am not sure of the water quality of the Harpeth river so I rarely eat from it.

If it were proven that fish feel pain the way we do, I would at least consider fishing only for food. Then I would just get out the big baits and bottom fish for the big ones so I could enjoy the battle of a big fish and then keep it for the table.

Sport fishing is addictive though... catch as many as you can, not worry about cleaning them, throw them back and they heal up fine.

I doubt they feel pain the way we do though. Obviously they can tell something is wrong with a hook through their mouth but I don't think it has the emotional effect on fish that it does on humans.

Gimme a break!....what next?
I've heard some think plants have feelings too, but I'm not gonna stop
mowing my grass, or give up my cornbread and taters either!
Cows, pigs and chickens all have feelings too, don't they?
Fish eat each other don't they?.....alive too!
They're just another link in natures food chain, and I for one
will keep right on fishin regardless of what the tofu pushers come up with.

Why would catching/ hypothetically hurting.. a fish and releasing it kill the fish? Unless you are pulling them up out of 100 feet of water or the water temps are too high.

Genesis 1:26-28 (King James Version)

26And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.

wouldn't stop me and i'm sure I've hooked a few (jerk baits on their backside or they swalloed a grub and got hooked in their insides) that felt pain.

I'd just knock them in the head quicker to put them out of their missery. I'd also stop stomping on them when they flop in the bottom of the boat. With trout, I'd make sure they were dead before I gutted them.

I also would quit biting the heads off live sardines. I don;t think I could stand them screaming. It's bad enough listening to the dang women scream when I do it.

I would give it up and plant a garden. NOPE that is no good either.

Did you know that Potatoes have eyes and can see up the farmers wife's dress right before she digs them up? Corn has ears and can hear them coming to get them.

I would never stomp a fish unless I intended to kill it. That's just inflicting unnecessary injury to a fish that is supposed to continue living.

I have to wonder if this is a Peta troll, seeing it's his first post. I hope I'm wrong. I fish for sport and food. I would not stop fishing.

It's like the anti-hunter calling me a murderer while eating a big beef steak. He basically hires someone to do his killing. I do my own. If I quit fishing because they feel pain and go buy fish at the market I am just paying someone else to kill them.

We were given dominion over them by God. Even Jesus fished. Nuff said.
Yep,his name is "Lefty" :)

You have to read sarcasm into some of what Bowriter says,I dont think he stomps fish that are going back in

Sometimes I do. If they fin me, I stomp the hail out of them and often bang them in the head with a tire iron. Once I gut shot a carp, pulled its' guts out an hung it from a tree by the guts. Took us all morning to fix the bullet hole in the boat.

Same dude also tried this with deer over on the serious forum. I think we got on to him pretty quickly.

catman- That entire post was a joke for the idiot to read.

If it was proven for a fact that fish felt pain, I'd probably have to switch to a different sport like bullfighting. :)
