Fish Identification

I caught this fish yesterday in a pond by my house, I have no idea what it is.

^ yep tilapia, they are stocked every year for algae control. Will be dead by winter

I watched them raising them on dirty jobs once... the talipia were eating the waste of some other fish they were raising up stream... not sure why but after watching the show i swore Id never eat one.. and havent knowingly done so..

I can understand not eating the commercial fish but they are quite prevalent in a lot of the lakes in fla. I would eat those.

i saw the same episode of dirty jobs, they were eating the waste of striped bass in a commercial setting. but i would eat the one that you are holding

A friend of mine stocked them in his pond for vegetation control and as a forage base for his bass.

They grew to about 1 lb in size in only a year (as a previous poster pointed out, they die off in cold water temperature in the winter).

I caught a couple in the fall. They were soft biting fish (didn't pull the float under, just hovered there nibbling), but would eat a redworm pretty readily. Never saw one touch a lure, so it looks like live bait is it. Didn't try crickets, but I guess those would work as well.

It was TASTY! You can usually see them really well, as they are so bright colored they often look white while swimming around.

I know one guy that goes to TWRA lakes that get stocked with them, and around the first frost he can dip them out with a long handled dip net as they are in rough shape in the cold.
