A couple weeks ago I rented one of the "billy goat" mowers and mowed down about half acre of under brush from a patch of woods, have been in the process of cleaning up the left overs since & hope to have it done in a couple more, trying to make a drag with spikes of some kind to help remove some of the shallow roots & help loosen the soil to plant.

Since its been mowed some sun gets in but still mostly shaded from the bigger trees, plenty of white, red & black oaks, a few hickory & other typical trees found on the mountain so they have something to offer as a food source for deer & squirrel (also planing on improving squirrel habitat to keep them around)

What would be something to plant thats shade tolerant, can grow out enuff to attract deer this late in the year.

Thanks in advance.

Plant winter grain rye. When the leaves fall go back in and top sow it again. Use a leaf blower to clear aaway the fallen leaves before you re-sow.
