I bought a few scopes over the last year and I'm finally getting around to mounting them. This is the first time I've done it myself, always had it done at the shop in the past. But I've also had poor results. So I made sure I have all of the proper equipment, but question eludes me. All the bases rings I bought are leupold, what are the torque specs for tightening the rings?

Base screws - 30 inch lbs
Ring screws - alum rings 10-15 inch lbs
- steel rings 15-20 inch lbs
Windage screws - 30-40 inch lbs

I have no idea how many inch/lb i tighten them but once I get them to where they wont turn anymore ill hold it there for a few seconds.

My 270 WSM did the same thing. I hate those mounts.
What happened there...is that after a shot?
I mounted three scopes and one to go. So far everythings good. I am going to order an exd vertical crosshair tool to make sure they're straight. I have the "level level level" but put little faith in that.

there was a very good article on scope mounting in one of the NRA magazines. the worst thing you can do is overtighten. "farmer tight" i think is what he called it.
NEVER had a problem with the STD Leupold/Redfields holding up to recoil inculding 300 RUM's and Slug Guns,or any trouble that was the mounts fault. I broke a windage base screw one time on a Redfield mount.
I did have a scope slip in the Millet version of these on a 30/06,they came on the rifle minus the friction tape Millet packages with theres. Replaced those in question with STD Leupold end of issuie. Have those on another rifle at present but with the friction tape this time so we will see,only used Millets on other time with no issuies.
I can't say about DA'a or MR Big troubles with them nor will I assume anything.But Win Model 70's Was talked about at the time at the store he had his mounted at they told me that Leupold had some recent defective screws at that time. I think his was a combo of things myself.One the above ,2 not tighting the windage screws correctaly got to snug both sides down not just one, and 3 below.
There is one bug that will bite one with those/these type mounts if they don't pay close attention.That is with the windage screws.One needs to make Sure the screw head meets up with the slot on the ring correctaly,and Yes they can be aligned on a rifle and not be in the slot correctaly an tightend up, been there done that but caught it in the mounting process or the same may have happened to yours turely.
Never used a torgue wrench on one yet,but have thought about it.

IIRC, I posted some pics of what happend to my bases and then a month or 2 later DA posted the pics above. Maybe the bases and rings were from the same batch. All I know is it sucks when you buy a brand new rifle and have them install the bases, rings, and mount your scope and the rings breaks after a couple of shots at the range. One piece systems are the way to go for me from now on.
