I won't get to go to the woods for a couple more weeks but having hunted our place for the past 9 years and covering a lot of ground I'd venture to guess there are very few rubs. For some strange reason our deer don't do much rubbing early on. In fact I find more scrapes than I do rubs for the first month of hunting season. Within a week or so of pre-rut I begin finding my first rubs. I find more rubs half way into the rut than I do total prior to then. I've tried to figure out why I see so few at Ames. The only thing I can come up with is that possibly we have so much thick stuff and native grass/weed/brush fields is that maybe the velvet is aided in shedding simply by them traveling through much of it?????

I agree Mike, most deer dont make big visible rubs during velvet shedding.I was all over 900 acres the last 3 days and found one small tree that had been rubbed just a little in last couple days. The big aggressive rubs will come in mid/late October most yrs for us.Mike Belt":1ee07mfk said:

I agree. Never seen one like this until around late October early November. Normally I'll have a couple scrapes and that's it. There was a rub line on 4 trees leading to this one.

I usually find a few small rubs this time of year around east tn. Ive never found scrapes this early though. I was in ohio scouting public land this past weekend and i found tons of fresh rubs... found 2 very aggressively rubbed trees that the buck had snapped the trees in half and carried the top part of the tree in their antlers a good ways. I also found 6 new scrapes that had licking branches broken last year during the rut but were active already. I was kinda confused by this sign and wasnt sure if it was vecause i was 6 hours farther north or if this was just a sign that there are some big daddys roaming around where i was scouting... whats your opinions?

They may never amount to even seeing the deer but those fresh thigh sized rubs, especially when found in numbers, sure can fire a soul up, lol. One of the rubs I like seeing the most is when I'm sitting on stand and see a 10'-12' tall pine tree shaking like it's in a wind storm and then watching for the deer that's busy making it.

I planted some apple trees in the spring in the yard. Before I left for vacation, I covered all of them with a wire ring except for one that wasn't doing well. When I got back over the weekend, a buck had tore into it pretty good. It was left laying on the ground with most of the bark gone. Glad I covered the good ones.
