I have decided to build a 6.5x47 and since this is my first build I have no idea what I am doing. I plan on using a bell and Carlson or McMillan stock, krieger barrel on a Rem 700 action. I currently have a rem 700 22-250 and I am wanting to use its action on my build. Now for my questions ...... what am I gonna have to do to the magazine to make it hold my 6.5x47 ammo?. Can I use the same bolt and change the bolt face?

Since both cartridges have the .473 case head diameter the bolt will work with no alterations required. When you say "You" are building the rifle do you literally mean that you are doing 100% of the work? If so, then I'd not do anything to the magazine until I had a problem. No use spending money and doing work for nothing. I'm looking at the dimensions for the two cartridges and they are so close that I'd think there would be no problem with feeding. Overall length is about .35 greater than your original 22-250 chambering but it probably has more room that that to spare in the front of the magazine.

Let me rephrase that. I am paying a gunsmith to build my rifle for me. I am buying all the parts and taking them to him. I would do good to build a slingshot by myself.

In that case I'd trust the gunsmith's experience. It's still good to know what to expect going into something like this though so you have some idea of the cost up front. The only time I considered having a custom rifle built was back in 1987-88 timeframe. I wanted a varmint rifle that could be used to kill flies. :) I knew a good gunsmith but could never get him pinned down to quote me a price. Not even a broad range.... I'm too cautious to stick my neck into that trap so I ended up buying a factory Remington 40X-Rangemaster - the one with the 27 1/4" barrel and got it rechambered to a wildcat.

Does anybody ever use Hart or Shilen barrels anymore???

the 6.5x47 with a .187 freebore will fit a Rem 700 short action loaded with 123-140 gr bullets like a glove,,no feed or extract problems whatsoever,,what you will need to do is send your bolt to Greg Tannel and have him bush your bolt face and turn your firing pin down to .062 to handle the small primers of the Lapua case,,if you shoot the small primers with a factory Rem bolt you will pierce primers way before you get anywhere near the pressure you need to run this case,,

other than that you wont need to alter anything,,some people use Sako extractors and all but my 6.5x47 Rem 700 action is 100% stock except for the firing pin mod,,it is only 80$ .

this is what your bolt will look like when Greg gets done,,there is no gap for the primer to get pushed through ,,



the 2 cases on left were from a Stiller action with a PTG bolt,,the 2 center cases from the stock 700 bolt,,the 2 cases on right from same 700 bolt after the bush/turn job from Gre-tan rifles,

it says 5-8 week turn around but when I sent mine it it was 17 days from the time I sent it in till I got it back,,,

the 6.5x47L will feed from the 700 factory box mag or any of the AICS 308 mags,,so you can use all your factory stuff or switch to the detachable AI mags if you want,,that is just personal preference and will have no bearing on the function of the rifle,,

it is the strongest brass case there is IMO,,I wore out my first bbl with 100 pieces of brass,,it is a very good round easy to load for,

That was another question I meant to ask. When I looked at the McMillan stocks it said 223 or 308 on the extended mags. So a 308 mag will work?

Every time I get to thinking about this, I catch myself trying to decide how to hit Mr.big over the head and just take one of his rifles. Then I think, what would be my excuse as to why I can't hit a barn at 600 yards when mr.big is showing off his groups with it; pointing to the obvious operator error. Decisions decisions

I'm curious to know how much groups have to open up before you consider a barrel worn out, Mr. Big? I'm willing to bet that barrel might still be real interesting to a normal varmint hunter, assuming the threads are common to some standard action such as a Rem 700! :shock: :mrgreen:

the bbl started on a Stiller action in a bench stock,,at 2700 rounds the throat was starting to erode and accuracy was falling off to about half moa,,I sent it back and had it set back and rechambered for the Rem action and put in the AICS 1.5 to bang steel with,,as long as I keep it clean it still shoots pretty dang good at over 3,000 rounds,,I will shoot it till it starts fouling quickly,,half moa will keep you on steel plates way out there
 
@ mr. Big and anyone else that has a 6.5x47. What is the deal with the brass? I can't find any anywhere

Lapua is proud of it. I had a couple hundred lapua 300wm brass a few years ago and me being a greenhorn threw it away because it got hard to load and it was extremely hard to chamber. Now lapua doesn't offer 300wm brass.

thats why I like the FL-S bushing size die
 
I use RCBS gold metal match full length dies. I love the micrometer on the top of the bullet seating die and the window where you put the bullet.
