We made the trip up to Wyoming earlier this week as we drew an early season turkey tag. All the national forest we planned on hunting in was still covered in snow. We saw an estimated 500-600 turkey all in and around town on private property.
After striking out on a small piece of BLM on opening morning we started knocking on doors. My buddy was able to talk a lady into letting him shoot a bird off of her land that afternoon.
The next day I wanted to check the same BLM spot out again. Sure enough there were 2 Jake's roosted about 20 yards on the public side. They gobbled about 50 times and then one pitched down right to me. The rest is history! We were taking pictures before the sun came up! With a snow storm moving in later that day I knew I needed to make it happen that morning, and I'm so glad it worked out! Since the hunt was over so fast, we were able to rebook our flights and fly out before the snow storm hit! Wyoming is beautiful and can't wait to go back!

Congrats! I went on my first Merriams trip last year to WY and MT, and I'll definitely be going back. The birds and the scenery were simply incredible. We spent a week tent camping and I loved every minute of it. Congrats again, beautiful bird.

I took a guy with me to Nebraska several years ago, prior to the fires that ruined Pine Ridge, when there was still a turkey behind every tree, and sent him out to hunt that morning. Birds were gobbling EVERYWHERE that morning, best I remember I killed and maybe the other guy with us killed as well. When we met back up late morning and I asked my buddy how many he had heard, he said "I aint heard a single turkey all morning!" My jaw hit the dirt and right about then, a bird gobbled several hundred yards away. I said "theres one". In 30 seconds it gobbled again and I said "there he is again". My buddy gave me a bewildered look and said "is THAT what they sound like? Ive heard that all over me everywhere this morning!" :D:D:D

We heard pheasants all day long. It took me awhile to figure out what I was hearing!
