A friend showed me an interesting newspaper clipping Christmas night. The story was about the first "modern" hunt allowed in Pickett State Park. In 1957 TN Game and Fish opened Pickett State Park to deer hunting. A 21 year old killed the first legal deer from the park(not the man I was visiting). The deer was a 27 point that dressed 247 pounds. The article went on to say the deer was a new state record. The story said "The deer had been shot behind the heart by another hunter" as it continued the young man that killed it shot it through the neck with a 16 gauge slug.
The men I was visiting was notorious for killing deer year round when I was growing up. He said that the first deer meat he ate was killed by a man that was my Dad's best friend when they were growing up. It was killed about 1950 from Pickett State Park. He went on to say he killed deer to eat, that he didn't care about antlers. He also told stories of almost getting caught by Officer Willie Upchurch in an area called Robbinstown and once in Big South Fork.
I wished I had took a picture of the clipping. Next time I'm at my Mom's I'm going to try to get him to give me the clipping. It would be an interesting addition to my scrapbook.
