What was your first turkey hunt like?

My dad and I both started hunting turkeys at the same time, when I was 17. Neither one of us knew anything about it, but we had been watching videos and buying turkey gear since December so we were excited. We hunted a farm that was about an hour away because there were not any turkeys close to us at the time. I remember walking out the ridge that morning and my dad and I looked at each other and said, " This looks like a good spot." I got the owl hooter out and reminded myself to use the beat, "who cooks for you, who cooks for you all." About that time a big longbeard about blew my hat off at about 75-80 yards ! We didn't know what we were doing , but there was obviously only two ways the bird could go, or so we thought. So, we split up. I stayed put and called to that longbeard for all I was worth. Threw every call that I had seen on the video at him and he gobbled them all up! I was pumped! I could see the big bird draped over my shoulder. I just knew he was about to come in on a string!
Meanwhile, my dad had circled the bird, and was about 100 yards from him. He too was throwing the calls to him. And the Ol Tom was hammering back at him as well. We kept this up until the longbeard hit the ground, shut up, and dissapeared into the wild blue yonder. I didn't get my turkey that morning, but I sure got the fever. This is my 11th season hunting the birds and every opening morning I think about that hunt.

I went with a friend of mine to his property, we set up on a bird which was hammering on the limb, and in no time he had the bird strutting for me at 25 yards. I missed. From then to now has been a long time, but very few misses in between, I took it personal that I missed that first one, and have tried not to repeat that even to many times over the years.

I was with my dad. I was maybe 21-22 or so. First time to ever hear a bird being worked. Took at least an hour to get him to come off that ridge, but it seemed like 6 hours.

I can still see him making his way down that hillside. I was "tore" up, and afraid to even blink, let alone try to get a gun up. Dad killed him.

I've never been the same since!
