This guy paid a visit to West Tennessee yesterday. Black bellied whistling duck.

Great pic, thanks for sharing. I work with a biologist that helps TN NWR staff trap/band ducks. He will love this pic, thanks again for sharing.

For those who like to nerd out on birds....

This helps explain why some of us have never seen this type duck:
(Info from US Fish & Wildlife)

"Black-bellied whistling ducks are found in southern portions of the Central, Mississippi and Atlantic flyways during summer, but they mostly leave the United States and migrate to Mexico and South America by early fall. Abundance is greatest along the U.S. Gulf Coast, but the species seems to be rapidly expanding its breeding range northward. This species was historically considered non-migratory, but migration certainly occurs in the northern and southern portions of their range".

Out of curiosity my first stop in research was Cornell Lab of Ornithology and they dont even show the black bellied whistling duck anywhere in the US other than the coast line and extreme southern boarder with Mexico. Living mostly in South America and Mexico.

Interesting that they have expanded their migration into our area.

Thanks for sharing!
