First foodplot. Thoughts?

Just had my first foodplot planted. It's about 1.5 acres of Imperial Power Plant (LabLab, Sorghum, Sunflowers, Beans, and Peas) with a outer edge of clover and chicory (may be a little late for this). I wasn't able to lime or test the soil but I'm hoping since this is the first time this ground was ever been turned it will be ok. Also notice the really tall weeds on the left on the other side of the tree, thats what it looked like before.

Think it will work?

Looks like a great spot! How did you plant it? I want to try to make up my own powerplant type mix as that stuff is expensive!
 
To be honest, idk. I hired a guy that plant it. I think its broadcasted. The only piece of equipment I seen was a disk.

I just thought from the picture it might have been no tilled but then again I'm looking at it on my phone, so. Its a little picture!

Keep us posted with pics, I hope it turns out great!
 
Will do! I plan on putting up my cameras on both ends within a couple weeks. Should get some nice pics considering what pictures I got last year when it was only 5ft tall weeds late in the season.
 
Soil test only takes minutes,best time /money you can spend.Ph makes a big difference.Good luck,but Id check it,try to get it right,food plots are far more important in the fall,just fun to look at in the summer.

Go in and pull the soil sample now and send it off. That way if it fails you know it was due to not being limed and fertilized,.. and not the seed you planted. From there,.. focus more on getting lime and fertilize in next time, not rushing to plant.

jmb4wd,.. if you can come up with a similiar mix and get it cheaper let us know. The co op in murfreesboro sells a mix just like the powerplant,.. but it ain't much cheaper. The lablab is what drives up the cost,.. sunflowers,sorghum,iron clay peas are pretty cheap,.. climbing soybeans are alittle higher, but lablab is high in cost per pound. BUT,.. IMO is a crucial part of the mix. I have not used powerplant in couple years,.. but it was $54 for 25 pound bag then at the co op in the boro and that covers 1 acre,.. thats alittle over $2 a pound of seed,.. about the same price as crimson clover per pound. I tried,.. and could not beat that price per pound by much,.. unless i dropped the lablab.
