Went up to the farm late this afternoon to spray along the fencerow and kill some grass. I'm planning on going in next weekend to mow down the annuals and trim the clovers and overseed my buckwheat , so i went back to check to see how everything looked. I was riding on the 4 wheeler in some weeds beside a road i have planted in red clover just evaluating the browse on the clover, not paying no attention to were i was going really , then i hear something. I knew right away when i heard it it was a fawn bleat,.. i have no idea if i ran over it or just got so close it scared it up, but the little thing bleated loudly and just kinda walked off and stopped. It looked at me for a few seconds and took off in the thick woods. Didn't seem hurt in any way. I just drove off so i wouldn't spook it any further away so maybe moma will find it when she returns. Just thought it was kinda cool. Thats as close as i have ever been to a fawn in the wild,. so it was a moment. :grin: PLUS,.. by looking at its size,. can't be no more than a couple weeks old at the most. SO,. go back about 200 days and that puts me in the middle of november. This is earlier than what i observe from the stand and the roads most of the time in cannon county. Most rutting activity is usually after thanksgiving. This was a real surprise.
I am proud i wasn't going down thru there on the bush hog. I will have to watch in there next weekend.
FYI ,.. the browse on the red clover is excellent. :)
