First call?

Ok so what do you all suggest for a brand new "duck hunter" as far as a call.

Figure all the call needs to do is make a good "quack".

Never thought I would, but it is looking more and more like I am gonna do a little more duck hunting. :eek:
 
How much you wanting to spend is the question? My advice is to go somewhere and blow different calls and see which one fits you the best.
 
For simple quacks I really do like the cheap Duck Commander Duck Picker call. It's low and ducky and makes good quacks and feeding ticks. It called in a few groups for us last weekend doing nothing but single quacks.

The other call I have is an Echo and cost about $60, I think. I like it too, but it's not as easy to get the low end quacks.
 
DR-85 hands down.Its like any other call, you have to figure out the right amount of air pressure to give it.I have several high end calls but still cant get away from the squeal the DR-85 makes.They break their neck when it sounds off.Most of these new generation Duck Hunters spend tons of money every year on calls and talk bad about the DR-85 when they couldnt master the squeal.
 
Get a good triple lanyard and add a decent goose call and a pintail "whistle" as well.

I've worked a bunch of call shy mallards using nothing but an old Herters pintail/widgeon call. It is super late in the year after they have been called to through 5-6 states and provinces.
 
Id reccomend a primos high roller whistle and, if you can find it, a buck gardner fowl mouth II! thats my go to calls and they sound/work awesome! Ive got the duck picker too, which sounds good as well, but the others just sound so much better.
 
Ruger try them first not everyone like's the same sound or even how they blow. I have several types I will let you try them and see which one you like the best. I have 200.00 calls all the way down to 19.95 calls. My best one that I love is a 40.00 dollar call made by Buck Gardner.
 
My buddy the big duck hunter that's "training" me suggested an echo poly in a double reed for my first call. (29.99 bass pro) I will say it sounds good and I got the hang of it quickly. I got the open water model but all the hunting I've done so far this year I wish I would have went with the timber model. Also the zinc power clucker is an easy goose call to learn on and sounds great. (29.99 bass pro)
 
Hay del DR 85 best starter call...I like a Primos Wench as well...pintail whistle is great as well.

More importantly, if you are where they want to go, it don't matter...you don't even need a call...that is duck hunting, not duck calling. Forget everything you have heard on TV.
 
DR-85 is a good starter call
Zink Power Hen 2 is a double reed call that is to blow too. Poly version is about $25.
I really love my Echo XLT Timber call.
 
ruger.....i found my first duck n goose calls on amazon at great prices...just a thought...search duck calls and see if they have what u want
 
DC Classic really does have a good ducky sound. A double reed call is easier for a beginner to get to sound like a duck. As you advance a single reed call takes less air to run it.
