First AR build

Since my go-to deer caliber is 308, I wanted to build one in the AR platform. After handling a few I discovered that they were extremely heavy and I don't want to carry the weight deer hunting. I can buy the dpms oracle for a decent price but I don't want to start putting different parts on it to lower the weight. I don't want the 300 BLK due to lack of ammo issues. So I decided to build a 7.62 x 39 and put it on my Bushmaster lower. The parts are readily available and the costs will be acceptable.

Talk me out of it.

I put together a 6.8spc a couple years ago for deer hunting. Plenty of ammo to be found online.

i find nothing wrong with 223 for deer


6.8 is a good choice

or 458 socom

I'm curious which .308s you handled that you found to be too heavy. Have you handled a DPMS Gen 2?

If you're insistent on the AR15 platform, 6.8 or 6.5 Grendel would be decent choices.

The DPMS Oracle was about 9 lbs.

I have a DPMS Recon LR308, the Gen1, that weighs substantially more than the 5.56 AR platform, about 11.5lbs with the 10rd mag and Sightron scope.
It's a hard hitting, accurate beast, and I don't mind the extra pound or 2.
The right sling makes all the difference in carrying any weapon.

I'll have to weigh it I'm not sure, but it is mostly the same components found in a M4 so I would say very close to mil-spec just over 6 pounds. Started out as a budget build consisting of a blem Double Star barreled upper at $250, Stag bcg on sale $100, Anderson lower $50, Double Star stock and CH, $45. The only thing I didn't cheap on was the trigger and got a hiper-fire ehd for $100 that came with LPK. So right at $550. Then it became my favorite when it unexpectedly shot lights out. Now she has been squared, has a cheap free float hand guard, A2 stock, and ergo grip with shelf. Amazon cantilever with AR-Optic 3-9x40. She loves the 95gr TTSX on top of aa2200. Consistently under 3/4" 4 shot groups, have put a handful under 1/2". I have three times as much in bolt guns that can't keep up [emoji24]. Loved it so much I now have two for no reason at all lol. I am heavily biased so disregard this last part: I own a few AR's, some nice bolt guns, heck I have a FNAR 308 that should be my favorite... but if I lost it all my two 6.8's would be the last to go.

Mine is similar to UH's. A cheap stripped lower with a PSA lower parts kit, magpul sl furniture, a Stag model 5 upper and a Geissele trigger. I put it together for my son to hunt with, but I use it more than he does. Mount is a Burris PEPR and a Nikon 3-9×40 pro staff. Only plans to change are a free float handguard and a smaller optic, probably Vortex.
