Finally made it to the squirrel woods this morn after a crazy week of staying up all night with new litters of pups. One of the strangest hunts I have been a part of. Had 5 on the ground by 6:15. Marked all my trees and made easy recovery. Felt I would be done by 7. Not hardly. Would not kill number 6 until 8:20 over a mile from where the first 5 fell. Anchored number 7, a fast traveling gray with a weakness for acorns. 8 a burly fox squirrel fell fast on his hills, as he crossed a cluster of cedars at the edge of standing soybeans. Even with no ground travel, he was an adventure to recover. Number 9 was introduced to the forest floor at exactly 9 o'clock, usually as late As I am willing to go. Decided I would wager on picking up a straggler on the long road out. My gamble paid off on a gray cutting pig nuts sitting on the remnants of an old homemade wooden deer stand. One of my latest limits in recent years. All in all, a tough but enjoyable hunt. I went 10 for 12, with one clean miss and an extra shell to persuade marginally hit fox squirrel to loosen his grip a bit. 7 Grays and 3 fox. 5 males and 5 females. 7 travelers, 2 cutters and a barker.
