I ordered a Remington 700 sps in 7/08 for my son. I will be topping it with talley bases/rings and a zeiss 3x9x40. He is only 6 now but he is a good shot and is pumped! It has the new "x" mark trigger. I have never owned a Remington, what do you guys know about this rifle? Is it a quality piece? What mods do I need to have done to it? What is a good hunting load for a 45 pound kid, low recoil?thanks
 
I think he'll do fine with that gun. I started with something similar when I was 8 except in a wood stocked .243. As far as mods: add a sling and ammo. :)
 
recoil of the 7mm08 is not bad to start with. i don't know if they make the reduced recoil ammo in it or not. if you handload, you can play with it.
 
Being it is an SPS, it has a cheap finish on it. Be sure to keep it wiped down with an oily rag or it will rust easily. Other than that, Remington builds a fine rifle.
 
Get a Kick Eeze cheek pad. Kids have short necks and small heads, and recoil hitting them in the cheek is worse than in the shoulder. It will also help them hold gun steadier and shoot better.

Personally, for a kid that small, I would hand load some reduced loads using H4895 or buy some reduced loads. You say he's a good shot so I assume you're already keeping him busy with the 22.

True story. Keep oil on that thing, or it will rust if you get within sight of a dark colored cloud. Just an unfortunate byproduct of the matte finish.

^^^ This ^^^ is very true, you must keep it oiled, and more so at first to get the oil into the finish.

Did you get the youth model? Otherwise it may be long on him for a while.

First thing you can do to help with the rust issue is take it out of the stock before the scope is on it and spray oil on it and wipe the "brown" off of it. It's gonna make a mess but you'll be better off in the long run. Keep spraying and wiping it till there is no more brown coming off of it.
 
I am concerned about some of you guys post about the "cheap" finish. Is the bluing not the same quality that I would find on the browning?

It's not the quality of the bluing; it's just that a matte finish has little pores that tend to retain moisture. There was never anything to "worry" about. Nevertheless, good luck to your son.
 
Well, I am jealous, that X bolt is one fine rifle. Congratulations on a fine choice and a very nice rifle for your Son.

You like the way the bolt moves, right?

For ammo (if you don't handload) look for the 120 grain bullets. The recoil is so low I pulled the bolt to see if I had a round in the barrel.
 
Yep, it was our first choice, I then thought about the Remington and went back to the browning, it is very nice in my opinion. Yep the 120 grain is what we will be trying first!
