Food Plots fighting off birds....

plowed up a spot for a plot tonight...gonna sow wheat and rye tomorrow if possible. i dont have a cultipacker or anything like that so im wondering if yall food plot veterans have any advice for keeping the bird scavenging to a minimum?

80's later in the week and wet as it is, should germinate quickly and pop up in just a day or 3. Some sort of drag would likely help: piece of chain link fence with a rightsized log strapped on top. Heck, back in the day I dragged a cedar tree around with a 4-wheeler...anything to cover the seeds a little.

And maybe plant in the afternoon/evening; you'll get that much more time the first day (during the night) the tweety birds won't be going to new buffet.

How big is your plot? If its half an acre or more, the birds probably can't eat enough seed before they sprout. I've heard others through corn along with cereal grains to sort of distract the birds from what you want to grow.

Boll, that's exactly what I was planning on doing. Dragging a clear tree... I figured it'd sprout pretty quickly.

And the plot is small and in the woods... I'm planning on over seeding the mess out of it so I'm sure my bird fears were irrational. I'm learning as I go, so I guess this lesson is not to fret the small stuff

Not if birds = a pack of turkeys. You might be surprised what those boogers can do in just an afternoon. Once they find it, they'll stick around until roosting time or something runs'em off...whatever comes first.

When I put in my NWG years ago, I pulled a log behind my Wrangler in 4WD lo. I've got a decent stand, but can't answer if it is "because of" or "in spite of".

I use a drag harrow to cover the seed that I bought from TSC. You only need the 4x4 and there is nothing better, "in small equipment......unless you own a drill! this thing is fail proof, one pass is all it takes to get results like this.
