Headed out for the afternoon and then all day hunts this weekend. Since the snow will probably stick around any recommendations on field or timber stands?

Wife wants another one for the freezer and really hoping to get my little brother on his first deer this weekend. Up against the clock.

Re: Field or timber in the snow?

Do you have an area to hunt that has been logged in the last 3 or so years that would be a good spot.

Sunny south facing slopes when the clouds break. They will be warmer and out of the wind. Maybe find a cedar thicket today.

I don't. We have alot of cut soybean fields with timber in between.

I have a stand in timber but the wind will be right at my back. The best bets I have today with wind are field edge and one spot in timber that I could ground hunt from.

Looks like it's gonna be the couch stand for me today fellas. There's a solid sheet of ice under the snow and its over an hour normal drive to the land. Just not worth fighting it in the 2wd truck I have currently.

Smart choice, a crashed truck makes and expensive hunting trip.
Sucks you couldn't make it out.

Definitely. I'm a little bummed but little bro has the 4wd so we can get out tomorrow or at least Sunday I'm sure.

That's the plan tomorrow. Good luck!

Re: Field or timber in the snow?

I was out yesterday morning. Absolutely nothing in the fields.
I did find them all congregated in one area:
South facing hillside, open woods, on a bench. They were bedded down facing down the hill with their backs to the wind. They had you coming and going.

Clever little buggers. We didn't see anything in the fields this morning either. Heading in at about 930 in the morning to the woods and then sitting the fields from about 230- dark.
