Field Hunting

Wanted to see everyone's feedback regarding field hunts this year. I have 3 acres of corn I cut 2 weeks ago and zero deer have been in it. But I'm not seeing any deer in woods either despite lots of oaks. Worst year I've ever had for sightings. And hardly any does--also no scrapes this year. Very odd.

I don't hunt fields often so couldn't really say. Are you finding any rubs? I've noticed where I hunt deer movement is down due to the amount of acorns and deer not having to move far to find food

Fields on our property have been fine this year as far as deer sightings. I will say more have been seen in the mornings than afternoons lately. Fresh cut corn field and no deer seen = not many deer around or lots of pressure.

My deer numbers have always been good. New neighbor 2 farms away who I've heard shoot a couple times. May be pressure coming from there. I would think I would see some tracks from night feeding in corn. Zero tracks. I don't run cameras at all but may put a few out in my woods to see what shows up.

If every deer on your property went 100% nocturnal for 100% of their life there's still one thing they can't escape... leaving tracks. We are seeing little to no tracks in fields or along miles of field roads. That seems to tell me there are fewer deer than what management where I hunt preaches. Even in heavy mast producing years deer are going to feed in fields.

Sounds like you either haven't found their food source or you don't have the deer on your place...fields have been almost dead for me this year with the drought, I'm hoping the rain we've had will green them up some before the end of season. Fields are brown as they've ever been due to 2 months of no rain. I've been killing a lot of my deer in thicker woods with green undergrowth, often near creeks

Thanks for the feedback. Odd year for sure--seams like there's a new wrinkle every year.

I only hunt fields and leave the woods as sanctuaries to keep deer on my properties. Seems like the same number of deer using the fields this year as years past. Of course, most of the bucks we shoot are not feeding in the fields, but rather following hot does.

I saw much less field activity this year, and mine are planted in turnips, rape, and red clover. For what it's worth, I saw very little movement in the woods as well. I'm not alarmed in the least.
