Field dressing at harvest site?

Does field dressing your deer at the spot of harvest ruin the hunting area? Will deer stop moving through / visiting the area. Thoughts or comments?

Has not been my experience. Have actually run deer off coming back to retrieve a lost item.

No I and others on our lease have field dressed where we shot them and have deer come through within hours or next day.They may even smell the pile but it doesn't seem to bother them. Might get you a coyote though.

I used to drag them out before gutting but not anymore. It don't bother them. Shot a doe several years ago and gutted her where she fell. Missed a buck that evening smelling her gut pile lol

I can't speak from much experience. We always haul them up to the main entrance where all the tools are. I don't think it matters though. I had 3 does feeding under an oak 20 feet from my gut pile near the gate a few weeks ago. I have also had deer come in to sniff at deer that were shot and lay dead in the field.

Only downside I can see is it might attract coyotes to the kill site.

I had a friend kill a deer that was eating acorns out of a gut pile from the day before.

I personally have killed deer eating acorns out of the gutpile from a prior days kill. I've also had predators (bobcats, coyotes) follow the blood trail from where the deer fell right back to my stand and get shot the next day.

the gutpile doesn't affect deer movement in the area in my experience.

I shot one opening day right in front of a trail cam. I field dressed it right there, coyotes cleaned it out that night, and there was deer there in the next morning.

I have never dragged guts in my life and have never seen any ill effects from a gut pile. I once set up a trail cam on a fresh gut pile and it was gone within 24 hours. The visitors included deer, bobcat, coyote, owls, buzzards, possums and coons

Dragging guts is overrated. I killed a double during muzzleloader a few years ago in a tight pinch. Both shots were u deer 35 yards. I hunted the same spot less than a week later and saw 10 in the first hour. Not a shred of guts left behind either.

Shot three does one morning field dressed them all on spot and could have shot another that evening had I a permit but was buck hunting but one thing that did bother me was the buzzards kept coming back :tu:

they won't spook over the guts, but they'll spook over coyotes chowing down and visiting the gut pile.

Saturday evening in KY, my buddy dropped a huge doe in front of the shooting house. We gutted right there. The next morning he missed one of our shooters (big double brow 10) as he was standing over the gut pile checking it out.

It won't spook deer. The only reason I load em up ( if I'm hunting the farm) and dress em somewhere else is that family dogs, neighbors dogs, buzzards and coyotes will scare them off if they come in to check out the gutpile. Mainly dogs.

If I'm not planning on hunting that spot for a few days, I dress em where they fall. YMMV.

Attracting coyotes is the worst thing, does not bother the deer. At my farm the deer hate coyotes and don't like them around.

I can only speak from my experience but we always brought our deer to the same convenient place to dress them. Late in the season I shot a wide, mature 9 point standing right in it. We had gutted several deer.

On the property I hunt, we have an area on the edge of the property designated for field dressing. We do that to avoid drawing coyotes to our hunting areas.
