FFG vs. FFFG?

What are the differences in shooting FFG and FFFG 777? A buddy of mine shoots FFFG and says it gets better ignition. But, he says to load less by volume than FFG, example 100 grains FFG would be equivalent to 90 grains FFFG. Any thoughts or ideas?

Generally all of those F's hanging out in front of that G signifies the coarseness of the grind of the powder. The more F's the finer the indivual grains of powder. When you measure by volume, the finer FFFg will naturally settle more powder in a given space than the coarser FFG. Try weighing equal volumes on a reloader scale and you will quickly see there is more by weight of the finer powder. Another thing to take in account is that the indivual grains of the finer powder expose more surface area to the catalist of burning. This will make the FFFG burn faster than the FFg creating higher pressures and a hotter burn. Hope this helps.

Careful exceeding 100 grains of FFFG...100 grains of FFFG is basically a magnum charge.
