Made it to TN! Saw 100 deer in the last 2 hours of daylight, 20 turkeys (no poults), and even the lone wild peacock ive heard the past 2 years but never laid eyes on. Life is good! Didn't see a buck I would shoot, but 3 or 4 in the 125in range I'm going to try to put my son on. Got 1 more day to nail their travel patterns down and get him in crossbow range. Man I've missed TN and its good to be home!

Terrible morning scouting... only saw 6, nothing worth even a second look.

Got a couple thousand pounds of lime on food plots and set cameras for this fall during mid day...

This eve, we went to a farm we saw a bachelor group of 10 last night, but was too dark to positively identify a shooter. 3 looked promising, but i wanted to see them with better light and find the crossing they were entering the field. At 715 this eve, they all pilled out into the field from a small hole in the fence. The second buck is definitely a shooter. At least 5.5, already out of summer coat and putting on a lot of bulk. And he's a clean mainframe 10 pusbing 140.

Can't hunt him in the mornings, impossible to get between the field and their bed. But the group has entered the field in the exact same spot for the past two evenings, so he is the plan tomorrow. Its gonna be tough to fool 10 pairs of eyes and 10 noses, but i think we actually have a chance.

Rain is fine (lightening is NOT) If we get a shot, its 150 yards from the fence crossing to the nearest cover. I can hunt them with any wind except east, as long as it isn't swirling, he may be in trouble!

Gonna sit in the car and scout a different farm in the morn with the crossbow in tow. If I see a shooter, ill try to get in between him and his bedding cover and go into sneak mode :) still have to refresh 3 salt licks and hang 2 more cameras tomorrow.

Perfect evening. We got to the brush blind 30y south of the fence crossing at 630. The bachelor group came out at 715, and slowly worked their way toward us. Our 10pt was 2nd in line, just like the past 2 days.

When they got to 35 yds, Ethan got ready on the crossbow. When our buck separated from the 3rd in line and was broadside I told him to shoot... he didn't. The first 3 bucks bunched back up headed to the crossing and they separated again after a couple more yards. Shoot NOW I urged Ethan, knowing they would group back up at any second and we'd lose our opportunity. He fired, too dark for me to see the arrow, and the bucks looked around for a bit, then eased back the way they came. I didn't hear the arrow hit,, nor did our buck react to anything other than the sound of the crossbow. I watched our buck for the next 3 or 4 minutes slowly working back in the direction they came with the rest of the group until they crossed out of the lane and into a thicket.

I felt confident it was a clean miss, Ethan said he rushed the shot (i dont understand that one, we had all the time in the world to be ready as they worked in), but we pulled out as another downpour started and went back home to dry off and look again. We just got back, I couldn't find the arrow in the grass field (not surprising), and didn't find blood (not surprising with the rain). We searched the crossing into the bedding cover they headed into for a couple hours, but no evidence of a hit. I would have been certain of a clean miss if we had better light when he shot, but since I didn't see the arrow, I wanted to give it every effort and teach Ethan a lesson, even if it meant we got muddy and wet.

Oh well, was a fun hunt that I planned out perfectly. Ethan just saved me a lot of work caping out the animal and $500 on taxidermy charges.

I'll go back out to my main farm to scout in the morn, but it has been a bust this trip since the lessee cut the hay Tues and baled Thurs and today... that totally disrupted their summer patterns for this trip.

I'm not sure if the bachelor group will come back in tomorrow eve. I doubt it, but we will prob give them and Ethan a second round.

They came back out this evening.... but 350 yards away from the fence crossing on the opposite end if the field from where we were set up. No way to get to them in the 15min of legal light we had left when they showed up.

Ethan shot the crossbow today and was drilling bullseyes at 40yds. Must have gotten buck fever yest eve and just yanked the shot.

Nothing wrong with that. For some, buck fever and the memories that go along with it leave a more lasting impression and desire to be in the woods than an actual kill. Kudos to him for getting after them and to you for taking/pushing him to be in the game.
