I started turning my own calls a few weeks ago and finally have a few I'd hunt with. My garage is full of sawdust and I've loved every second of it. I'm still experimenting with design and soundboard/surface combos. Let me know what you think about these 3 combos.

-Black anodized aluminum over glass in walnut pot

-Slate over glass in walnut pot

-Slate over glass in maple pot

You can hear a bird gobble after I finish running the aluminum. The 3rd pot is the maple slate (I said walnut maple for some reason).

These calls were turned on a lathe and not just assembled.

Can't really tell...maybe you should send me one for a couple years to check it out :tu:

They sound great! Especially the aluminum.

Hard to tell 100% in the video but I'd hunt with any of the 3. The maple to me sounded the best of the slate for the pitch I like and sounds a tad higher pitched then some slates I hear which I like

The aluminum sounded very very good and I don't normally like aluminum
 
Thanks guys! The aluminum and maple slate are my favorite. I still need to make a few tweaks.

Thanks! I added a soundfile of just the maple slate to the original post. It's my favorite slate combo so far.

I agree that the aluminum sounds absolutely phenomenal. The maple slate sounds great as well. You should put up a sound file running the black locust striker also. BTW, great calling.

If you can find some tulipwood, turn a striker from that. It will blow your mind on those calls. I drive by woodcraft all the time and will look to see if they have some this week.

I appreciate it! I have a Fred Cox tulipwood that sounds awesome on aluminum calls. I'm staying away from the expensive exotics until I really get it down.

I get it. Again nice job on the calls.
 
My favorite was the second one. Really rolls over nice for 2 tones on the yelps. I wouldn't hesitate to take that one in the woods on any hunt. The first one was really nice as well. I didn't care for the 3rd one. It will work, but the 2nd was head and shoulders above.

Great job making those pots yourself. Cool hobby!

String ....the aluminum sounds fantastic.

I admit I'm a "potcallaholoic" so if you decide to sell any of these, I'd definitely love to be on the list for an aluminum over glass.
 
I listened to the videos 4 times just like I was judging a competition, and here is what my ears heard:

Yelping: Walnut, Aluminum, Maple
Clucking: Maple, Walnut, Aluminum
Cutting: Maple, Walnut, Aluminum
Purring: Walnut, Maple, Aluminum
Roll Over: Walnut, Maple, Aluminum
Nasally Sound: Aluminum, Maple, Walnut
Locating Ability: Aluminum, Maple, Walnut

For the majority of my up close and personal woods hunting, I would choose the Walnut Slate, but the Maple is the best "all around" to my ears, and the Aluminum reminds me of a nasally run and gun/locator style call.

You are off to a great start Mark, big kudos to you. Did you turn the strikers too?

Thank you. Once I really get the hang of it and find the right combos, I'll start selling a few. I've got a couple walnut pots drying right now that will be aluminum over slate and aluminum over aluminum. I'm curious to hear the difference in sound.

Thank you, Andy. That is an excellent review! I did turn those strikers. I'm still trying to find the design I like the best. I do like a shorter striker in the 6.5 inch range.

I'm trying a maple double slate next. I'm trying to get a mellow, throaty sound with good volume with my slate.

The Walnut slate with Hickory striker for me...they all sound very good.

Walnut has always been a favorite for me, however, I have a cedar box that sounds good.
