If all you want to do is see some deer coming in to your yard, you'd be money ahead planting a few fruit trees such as apples, pears, cherries, persimmons, etc. It'll be quality time spent with the kids creating a food source that not only the wildlife but yourselves will be able to enjoy for the rest of your life. It's just good old fashioned fun watching the kids run around picking fruit to eat right off the tree. And they'll enjoy watching the deer, squirrels, raccoons, opossums, rabbits, turkeys, birds of all types, etc. doing the same.
When I bought my little farm 34 acres 8 years ago. We started planting trees of all sorts. The kids really enjoyed it and now it's a hobby for us. We have a variety of Apple, persimmon, pear, peach, sawtooth, dunstan and Chinese chestnut trees. I'll be adding a couple different oaks this winter along with 4 crabapple trees. Will likely try to add some more pear and persimmon when I can find them.

I put a tube around mine and also a 5 foot fence about 3 foot round. I've lost 2 apple trees in 8 years. I will be replacing those as well.

The sawtooth are 6 year old and about 15-17 foot tall now. I've been getting some fruit and chestnuts and hoping next year is the year they all start to produce. I've got a lot tied up in each tree. But it's an investment for my farm and for my kids future.

Once they are pretty established I start pruning off the lower branches so I can mow under them. A lot of people will mulch around them but I've noticed it can cause some issues. So I usually spray weed killer then I'll take grass clippings and pile around the bottoms to help hold the moisture in and keep weeds at bay.

I also made it a point to have different trees with early and later drop times to have a good cycle of fruit dropping from late summer to early fall.
