I've got the relic hunting bug here lately and have been getting out a little bit. I'm always on the lookout for projectile points and then went to a little Civil War camp the other day to hunt.

Here are some of the points/pottery I've got this month:









And the Civil War relics dug in Athens, TN on private property.

 
Nice finds! That big one at the top of the plate is a heart breaker. Looks to be a lost lake.

What is the piece on the left that you dug...........
 
The brass piece on the left is a bayonet scabbard. Basically its purpose was to keep the tip of the bayonet from jabbing into stuff; kind of like a sheath for a knife. It would have had a piece of leather on it for the whole bayonet blade to go down in, and that brass piece was on the end of it. I've never dug a perfect one; they've always been bent or crushed. I think that's the second one I've dug on that little camp site.

I don't know much about the projectile points and their names. I am just happy finding them. Even if they are broken.

My buddy and I walked the banks last week and he schooled me on finding them. I was a bit over taken by the amount of flint to deal with on the ground...and everything that looked like a point to me, was just a leaf or a flint chip. We were hunting little piles of rocks and after looking at several dozen of these things, my eyes begin to cross and I couldn't see the forest from looking at the trees. I think he picked up 4 that I had nearly stepped on, including two of my favorites...the little triangle pieces. I think you guys call them Hamiltons? They would stick out after he would point them out with his walking stick but I just couldn't spot them little buggers that well.
 
Yup you know your in the right place when you go "flint blind" :D

Your right, the little bird points are hard to spot. The trick I use in those spots is to slow way down and flip every piece of flint. Slowing down, really just standing in the same spot, and looking at every square inch, your finds will go way up.
