Fawn Predation......

A friend of mine was out scouting when he heard a lot of scampering noises from the nearby woods and finally went to investigate the source. Upon entering he could see the little bucks struggle to evade the coyotes as they had ran him down and killed him. the little buck was still warm and i am sure the yotes werent really far away.
I know it is nature but i despise coyotes in any significant numbers as they take their toll of fawn recruitment.
I will try to bust one with this pic in mind for this fall......and i will feel good about it when it is over.

I think coyote predation is worse than has been previously thought by biologists.

I would love to do some trapping at Ames.

It takes a good trapper many many hours to put a dent in coyotes, and the fur market makes it very difficult to cover expenses. But it sure is fun to trap and a great way to learn and understand the woods.

If your going to trap coyotes, do it just before fawning season, when a lowered predator population will actually make a difference. Fawns are most susceptible to predators for the first six weeks of their life.

Great point Bsk.. We have a guy who does some trapping and last year he trapped 25 coyotes on our lease....a number i thought unlikely. he didnt do it this past winter because the pelts werent bringing anything.
