Fav 308 bullet

Gonna get a 308 this spring instead of the 270 i have been shooting. Being that it is a very popular round what are some getting the best results from as far as accuracy. I know each rifle is different and I will prob end up with a Howa 1500 but just looking for a starting point.

I have been using the Federal Fusions for my 243 and 270 with great results so I will prob try those first.

if reloading the Sierra Game King BTHP 165 gr can not be beat for accuracy/deer killing,,if Factory ammo the Federal with 165 Sierra SBT Game King bullet or the Hornady 165 Gr Light Mag load is wicked,,

but you will be hard pressed to pick a load out blindfolded that will not work on deer in a 308

I like the Hornady Interlocks, they are fairly cheap and very deadly.

Federal Fusions! Super cheap and more accurate than most other factory loads that I have used.

150 BT's are hard to beat in the 308. Bunch of bang-flops for me with that combo this year.

You will get a bunch of bang flops with the .308....or at least that has been my experience. I have a hard time finding a bullet my .308s dont like....my .308s dont seem to be finicky.

I like 165 gr bullets in my 308s, but 150s work good as well. You don't need to break the bank on bullets for a 308. Standard cup n cores work just fine at the lower velocities that a 308 works at. The Fusion is a good factory load, my favorite is the now discontinued 165 gr Nosler Solid Base.

I like the 165 SST or the Interbond. Both bullets perform well. For factory ammo, the 165 Fusion performed the best for my rifle.

I don't shoot factory ammo, but if I did, I'd like to try Fusion. I've been looking for the bullets they use in the Fusion so I can handload some, but I haven't found them.

We've been using Nosler Ballistic Tip 150 gr in our .308 for years, and it's worked very well for us. I just asked my son if he wants to try something else (I use Hornady Interlocks and SSTs in most of my other rifles) this year, but he said to buy another box of Noslers and load 'em up. Gonna do that this afternoon before SuperBowl.

I concur 100% Barnes = Best hunting bullet ever made by anyone in any caliber.

I like the Barnes, too, but I have a hard time with them being twice the price of other quality bullets. With the good results I'm getting with the Hornady bullets, how much better can the Barnes be?

Having said that, if life is too short to drink cheap wine, then maybe it's too short for cheap bullets. For the number of shots I fire each year, what's another $35 per hundred shots?

For the kind of hunting you do.... No.

Heavier bullets are better for long range accuracy. (in general)
Since we rarely sit beanfields and take long shots, almost any ammo will do.

If your pushing the limits of the bullet construction, going to a heavier bullet will give you a little better performance.

Example:
My 7 mag pushes a 150gr load too fast under 100yds and it tends to blow up game and bullets. Core separation and LOTS of blood shot meat. For some reason, that gun wants a 150gr loaded near or at max for best accuracy.

162gr loaded near but under max will drop the speed 200-250fps and gives good expansion but doesn't blow up a deer into a splattered mess.

These are general rules of thumb and I'm sure someone will jump in with an exception to the rule.
