I am wanting to try to plant a fall/winter food plot this year on some property i have. It is a small property prob only 3/4 of an acre, but im just wanting something to try to feed the deer thru the colder time of the year to help with the toils of winter as well as pull some extra to my property.

Through the property there is a fresh water spring that runs out of the hill side that would run just on the bottom side of the food plot along with a large pond about 50 yards away.

My question is what would you plant to really pull the deer in such a little plot? I was looking at something like Power Plant to really grow a whole lot of forage but want something they just can not resist?

I am wanting to fence the area around it for as long as needed to let the area grow as much as needed to really attract deer later in the season.

So what would you plant???
 
Powerplant is a summer annual,.. not a fall/winter planting.

By far the most attractive fall planting is oats and winter peas. Winter peas does not tolerate heavy browsing early on,. and even if fenced ,. on 3/4 acre you have a high risk of the deer wiping it clean once the fence is down. BUT,. since your working with such a small/medium sized plot,.. and only that one you have to work with,. you could try imperial pure attraction. Make sure your ph level is 6.0 or higher before even attempting it though.
 
ya ive done a lot of research tonight about plants etc... thats when i really found out that power plant is outta the ? here...

I was wanting to try to do a good blend that incorporated several different things...Winter Peas/Rape/Winter Oats/Clover

Im hoping that the clover will work well until the first frost hits and then dies out then the other will take over for later in the season...

I really like Turnips with the more research ive done... Seems after the first frost people say they really turn on...My only problem is that it says to plant in drier surfaces...

My problem is that i have a large fresh water spring that comes literally at the bottom of the food plot that runs down into a pond and the ground stays pretty hydrated thats for sure...

Same goes with Canola, from what ive read once the first frost hits they start to break down and are almost like pure sugar to the deer...

If any of this is off base let me know....

You should seriuosly look at imperial pure attraction. Its a mix of winter peas, oats and winter greens. Buy the mix,.. and if you want alittle clover in it ,. buy 5 lbs of crimson clover at the co op and mix with it. If you were dealing with more than just 3/4 acre,. i would say mix yourself,. but since your dealing with 3/4 acre,.. its just as cost freindly to buy premixed.
 
Thanks deerchaser07 ive been lookin at mixes for sure i like the pure attraction, but i like some by biologic as well as some from natures own....
 
GO WITH A MIX OF WINTER WHEAT AND RYE WITH A LITTLE BRASSICA MIXED IN WITH IT. WHAT PARTS OF BLOUNTVILLE DO YOU HUNT. HAVE A FEW PLACE THERE MY SELF I HUNT.
