Gotta wait for a high probability of rain. I've made the mistake of planting on or before labor day when I had free time assuming it would rain within a week only to have my hard work and money go down the drain.

What's the latest you can plant?

I've waited until the second week of October before because of drought/availability. If i'm not mistaken wheat and rye will grow as long as it's above freezing. Germination won't be as good but it beats having to re-sow.

Next Saturday is looking to be the best chance of rain. But at 40% and 9 days out it's too early to tell

Cereal rye will terminate down to 37 degrees and will grow on rocks or in the bed of your truck.
