estrous scent

I normally do not use estrous scent or any scent for that matter. I try to stay as clean as possible. When I kill a buck in rut I do use his tarsal glands in a hunting area far removed from where I harvested the buck. When I used estrous scent previously it would spook the deer. Any thoughts....personal experience. Thanks.

I tried two different brands two different times and watched does catch the scent and turn directly around. I also know people that swear by it but for me, I stay high in the tree and as scent free as possible.

I don't mess with it. I use evercalm on my boot soles to cover my entrance trail.

Don't have much experience with store bought scents....but I also have used the tarsel glands from a buck I took off one farm...saved them in a Ziploc bag and the next morning while hunting a different farm I opened the bag and placed them near base of tree....couple hours after day break I had young 8pt come from thicket walking down logging road and once near tree he stopped , turned and came directly to base of my tree and stuck his nose in bag! Wasn't nervous acting at all.... actually he walked back to logging road and went 30yards and started working a scrape....cool experience....and I thought I may be on to something.....until an hour later a dog came trotting down logging road....and he slammed on breaks, turned and came to tree...and ate both tarsel glands from my bag!....oh well...fun while it lasted

I shot him at 10 yards with a .270. In saying that, I pulled a cord out this year while in my stand, hung it over the side, within 30 seconds and not more than 25 yds behind me, a bedded deer (couldn't see it) blew at me and sprinted away. This is my story this year. Anytime I've brought it out, it's a ghost town. I'm done with it.

Thanks for bringing this up. I have been proud of myself this year when I get through with a hunt and deer have come in downwind of me without catching me. Since I brought the estrus out I have been caught several times.

I take the tarsal glands, run zip ties through them, put them in a baggie, put them in the fridge/freezer until next hunt, then hang them via the zip ties on tree limbs. I've never really noticed any positive or negative reactions to them. I think the theory is that more dominant bucks will come in to check out who is in their area. I have been curious if anyone had had any luck with tarsal glans.

I've spent a small fortune on all of that stuff. The estrous urine, drippers, sticks, spray cans, buck urine, gland scents, etc. and nothing has noticeably worked positive or negative. That said, I do like those little yellow bottles of scent pro powder. I use it to make mock scrapes and to check wind. Countless times I've had young deer approach out of curiosity and the scrapes almost always turn into social hubs at least leading up to and during rut. I have no idea what it's made of but it smells like deer, not like deer urine but like deer. Sometimes I catch a whiff of deer as I'm walking in the woods, and that's what this stuff smells like. Otherwise, I've given up on any kind of scents or attractants.

Furthermore, I have noticed that when I use urine, sticks, or gland scents, the deer that do come by are on alert. They are super sniffy and edgy. I get busted a lot more often because they're expecting to find something. When I don't use anything, deer that come by just come by & keep on going about their business. I like to hunt transition trails near bedding and it's not abnormal for deer to plop down for a nap under my stand. That has never happened when I try an attractant scent.

I'm another one for no scent whatsoever. Growing up, I saw many deer coming in or following a scent drag, but nothing over 2.5....and will work effectively on a lot of them. I don't believe you're going to trick the majority of mature deer

I've had a 2 yr old walk right up to me. I mean two ft away sniffing it but also that 8 pt I wrote about. This year they won't get close.

It's called Scrape Fix. I'm not sure why I thought it was called Scent Pro. Anyway, heres a screenshot. I buy a few bottles every year and give them to friends and family, and hook them on the zippers of my backpacks.

Which do you prefer? I used the hot n ready and had a buck I guessed at 3.5 come in downwind. I wanted the XXX but dunhams was sold out and didn't want to wait on an order.

I used the same as you. Our local Walmart sold it this year. It was the only version that they sold locally. I firmly believe most people overuse/misuse scents. A little goes a long way. I personally believe their product matches the deer herd in SE TN well. I have not had as much success with other versions here locally over the past 20+ years, except the occasional use of buck bomb's version of doe in estrous

I posted a couple weeks ago about how the wind is ALWAYS shifting where I hunt in the river bottoms. So I started putting out 3 of the little orange buck bombs full of estrous doe pee thinking when the wind shifts wrong it might cover me. I had a doe come by me Saturday and when she got near the bombs she got real nervous. She never flagged or ran but she trotted a little and didn't waste any time leaving. I have had great results with scrape drippers. After all the scrapes dry up and cover with leaves the bucks will continue to check/work scrapes with a dripper.

Over the years I've used a variety of estrus scents and dispersed them with almost every system made. Can they work? Yes. Do they work a good percentage of the time. No way in the world. At the percentage I've seen them work it's almost useless to try them (particularly on mature bucks) but on that rare occasion that they do it's a thing of beauty. I've probably had more success using buck scents.

I had an older guy tell me he takes his wife's tampon after she gets done and hangs it next to his stand. tags out every year.. I have yet to try, but desperate times calls for desperate measures lol...

The only scent I use is 50-1 chainsaw fuel..........Everybody knows that deer always come to a chainsaw but it isn't the sound, it is the smell! :poke:
